According to the National Family Health Survey (NHFS) 5 phase-II, the Total ANS - A
Fertility Rate (TFR), or the average number of children per woman, has
declined further from 2.2 reported in 2015-16 to 2.0 at the all-India level.
• An ideal TRF ratio is 2.1, which indicates a sustained level of population.
• India has fallen below the ideal TFR. A fall to 2 means India has achieved
the goal of population stabilisation.
o This means India will possibly still become the most populous country
in the world — it was expected somewhere between 2024-2028 — but it
will now be delayed.
• The NFHS-5 assesses 2019-21 period.
