Aral Sea

Before 1960s, it
was accounted as
the fourth largest
lake in the world
with an area of
68,000 km2.

An Endorheic lake.

Rich for marine

biodiversity before
1960s.
Presently,
approx. 90% of
its area has
shrunk.

Remains of the
sea is left in the
form of patches.
Located at the
Uzbekistan and
Kazakhstan border.

It receives its water

from Amu Darya and
Syr Darya.

Drying up of this lake

is not only impacting
the marine
biodiversity but it is
also having a negative
impact on the lives of
humans residing on
the peripheral area of
this lake.

Presently,
Kazakhstan is
working on
rejuvenating the
Northern Aral Sea
with the help of
World Bank.

But the southern

portion in
Uzbekistan is in
ruins. The Uzbek
govt is not keen to
revive the sea.
Divergence of the
Amu Darya and Syr
Darya towards
agricultural fields for
water intensive
crops like rice and
cotton.

Presently,
Uzbekistan is the
8th largest producer
and the 11th largest
exporter of cotton in
the world.
In the first half of
the 20th century
prior to the
irrigation, the
sea's water level
above sea level
held steady at 53
m.

By 2010, the large

Aral was 27 m and
the small Aral 43
m above sea level
