Understanding the Self

There are billions of people around the world yet no one is the exact copy of
another. All of us may have numerous similarities but we may also have subtle differences
that sets us apart to others. Being different is not a bad thing, all of us have our own
identity and I can say that there is no other me in this world. Let me introduce myself, I am
Matthew Ang, a (age)-year-old student who is currently studying in (school). I am studying
(course) because I want to be a (dream). My roles in life is not different from those who are
around my age: I am a son to my mother and father, a friend to my peers, and a good
member of our society who constantly works hard to achieve my dream. My roles are
pretty much common however, what sets me apart from others are my personality,
dreams, experiences, and those who love me. My parents are different from the parents of
other people; they raised me differently and lovingly than the others. I have a unique set of
friends who likes me for who I am. My set of hobbies and interests including biking and
being a food connoisseur makes me unique. Everyone around me greatly contributed to
what I am today. Society vastly affects the people in it: how they live, perceive themselves,
and their beliefs and traditions. I firmly believe that what makes a person unique is the way
they lived their life, or experiences in other words. A self is a bundle of experience and
these experiences shapes us into what we are today. Similar to pieces of Lego, each blocks
of experiences builds us up little by little – we achieved something great, we cry and laugh,
we commit mistakes, and we learn from those. All of our experiences contribute to what we
are and we believe in. As we look back in the past, we can say that if that did not happen, I
will not be as happy as I am today.
