Topic 6 Internship Reflection

Significant Leadership Experience

One memorable leadership experience that occurred during my internship was taking an

active facilitator role with my related arts team for our first meeting of the school year. As I

spent time during the summer with my mentor reviewing our new staff handbook, I gained

expertise that I shared with my team. We reviewed our year calendar, provided expectations as

staff and team, discussed our norms in meetings, lesson plan templates, grading system, and class

schedules. This was an important step that I took by leading my team and ensuring their

questions and concerns were addressed when I met with my mentor the following day. Another

important aspect of this experience was taking on the leading role as a returning teacher to

support our two new team members. My partner and I met with the new teachers to welcome

them and discuss our experience in school with administration, teachers, and students. As a

future athletic director, this helps me to understand how I could support returning staff to help

their new members adapting to a new campus and new culture.

Connection to ELCC Standards

My experience as a facilitator in my first related arts team meeting was focused on

providing essential information to be prepared for the new school year. Also, I ensured that our

new members on the team felt welcomed and received resources/guidance to support their needs.

This experience connects with the Educational Leadership Constituent Council (ELCC)

standards as noted in standard 1.1 where “Candidates understand and can collaboratively

develop, articulate, implement, and steward a shared vision of learning for a school.” (National

Policy Board for Educational Administration, 2011). As a third-year teacher in a leading role, I

have the expertise and confidence to support new teachers by helping them adapt to our school

culture and environment.

Technology Tools

I used technological tools to collect artifacts that demonstrate my professional conduct,

rapport with my school community, decisions made under my lead, and leadership tasks. The

first tool I used is my professional portfolio where I gathered leadership tasks throughout my

internship. Another tool I used is my Google Drive folder with files and documents that I created

for leadership tasks aligned with being an athletic director for my site. Another tool I used was

an email folder where I gathered work that I helped my mentor with by reviewing, editing and

modifying. Lastly, I also used Facebook as a tool where I have records of communication with

my school community including parents and guardians.
