Comprehensive Method to Predict Gas Kick Velocity in Oil Base Mud

In drilling operation, gas kick is not an event to be expected. Gas kick tends to mix with
oil base mud, axecerbate the problem. One of main challange in gas kick is to predict
rising speed of gas kick expecially in well with oil base mud. During well control, bottom
hole pressure should be managed to prevent additional kick and casing shoe pressure
below formation fracture pressure. Usually, rising speed of gas kick was predicted
based on field experienced.
Ling et al. (2015) described method to predict rising speed of gas kick. This method
basically neglects compressibility factor and gas solubility. By neglecting those
parameters, Ling technique underpredict the rising velocity. This paper take those two
into the calculations, develops more rigorous technique for gas rises prediction.
Several assumptions are applied in the calculation. The model is based on first cycle of
driller’s method in well control. This model gives assurance to field execution. In real
time cases, adjustments are needed to get the closest result. The experiment is
conducted using reference well which has accurate data of gas kick rising speed.
Further study experiment and data are needed to ensure more accurate model.
