Tense

The Tense of a verb shows the time of an action or event


that denotes the time of a verb.
He goes to school.
He went to school yesterday.
He will go to school tomorrow.
There are three principal tenses :
i)Present Tense
ii) Past Tense
iii) Future Tense
Present Tense: The Present tense describes an action
that is going on at present. I go. He writes.
Past Tense : The past tense describes an action as having
occurred in the past. I went. He wrote.
Future tense: The future tense describes an action which
is yet to come. I shall go. He will write.

Each of the principal tenses is again subdivided into four


Forms: i) Indefinite
ii) Continuous
iii) Perfect
iv) Perfect Continuous

Present Indefinite tense: Present Indefinite tense


describes an action in the present time. It also describes
habitual actions and universal truth.
Structure: Subject + verbs present form(base form) +
object
Example
I write a poem
I = subject ( 1st person)
Write = verb ( base form)
A poem= object
He writes a poem.
He= subject (3rd person singular number)
Writes= verb with ‘s’
A poem=object
They write a poem.
They=subject(3rd person plural)
Write=verb( base or present form)
A poem= object
