The reporters discussed about education and Philippine cultural values

and education and socialization. First, when we say culture, it is the total

complex of values, beliefs, practices, behavior, patterns shared in common and

transmitted by a group of people from one generation to the next. Values

education is one of the most important things that should be taught in schools.

As Filipinos we are all known for our good characteristics. When we were still

small, we are taught by our parents to give respect to elders, love our brothers

and sisters and family, have faith in God and always be kind to others. However,

in our generation today these traits are slowly fading. That’s why it is important

to practice values in schools among students. The educational institute of the

country plays a big contribution in promoting values education for students to

construct a good character. By promoting values education in schools, we can

create a better country for the future generations through lessening the negative

attributes by teaching values.

“National strength can only be built on character.” Said by our late

President Manuel L. Quezon in his speech. Indeed, he is right that the strength

of a nation can only be build through well rounded, disciplined and patriotic

countrymen. And as Filipinos we obtain those characters. We are hospitable,

respectful, loving, caring and religious.

. Along with academics social and cultural aspects are also cherished by the

Philippine schools. Culture is the foundation of education, sustainable

development, and governance in culture-based education. Culture influences

how we see the world, how we see the community that we live in, and how we

communicate with each other. Being a part of a culture influences our learning,

remembering, talking and behaving. Therefore, culture determines to a great

extent the learning and teaching styles also. Culture-based education is an

approach in which teaching and learning happen based on the values, norms,

beliefs and practices that are the foundation of any culture. Harvard Professor

Jerome Bruner notes “Culture shapes mind, it provides us with the tool kit by

which we construct not only our world but our very construction of ourselves

and our powers”.

The socialization functions in education can be defined as availability for

work and an ability to make decisions independently so that the individual in his

later life period could perform his social roles and integrate in social structures

with specific role types. Education and socialization are two terms that address,

each in specific ways, processes of the intergenerational transmission of

knowledge. Education is mainly used to describe differential educational

programs in institutional arrangements and the resultant opportunities for

educational attainment.

Socialization, on the other hand, refers to those primary social

experiences that are inherent to intergenerational social relationships.

Socialization is a general term used to describe the processes happening

between society and human beings. But more specifically it is a core concept

of sociology of education. Socialization is a term used by sociology, social

psychology and educational theories. This term refers to the process of

inheriting, learning and internalizing the norms, customs and ideologies of a

culture and society. A society develops a culture through a number of shared

norms, customs, values, traditions, social roles, symbols and languages.

Socialization helps an individual to learn and inherit these values. More than

that, it helps him/her to gain the skills and habits that necessary for participating

within their own society. In other words, socialization makes a person an

accepted individual in a society by cultivating certain values. We can say that

socialization is the process by which society and culture continue to exist.

Socialization is the primary means by which human infants begin to acquire the

skills necessary to perform as a functioning member of their society. This is said

to be the most influential learning processes one can experience.

In conclusion, both values and socialization are made an impact in terms

of education. Even when I was young and until now that I am now a teacher, I

can say that values education slowly fading now a days, even the teachers’

taught values in school but the young generations are not appreciating the

importance of values in their lives. So as a teacher all we need to do is to

integrate the values education in every subject we taught. Always taught that
values are part of our culture and do not forget that. We can pass it to generation

to generation. And in socialization, children learn from their parents, friends and

teachers. So, if we collide them the values and socialization, we can make a

better generation who have values in their life. Like they said it’s really hard to

connect the teenager now a days in the right path. So we teachers can be a

bridge for the betterment of our young learners.
