history, their traditions, and the nation
as a whole.

The development of the Philippine arts


comes in three major traditions. These
are the Ethnic Tradition, Spanish
Colonial Tradition, and American
Colonial and Contemporary Arts
Traditions.
Historical Timeline Of Philippine Arts
Ethnic Tradition
The geographical setting and the cultural experiences
of the Filipino people have a major influence on art
forms (Luzviminda & Sayseng, 2016).
The function of the arts in this time is essential to life.
The community's distinctive ornamental art pattern,
daily activities like farming and fishing, and paganism
were all portrayed in the arts.
Examples:
Angono Petroglyphs
The Angono Petroglyphs are located in Binangonan,
Rizal. Carlos "Botong" Francisco, a national artist, first
discovered it in 1965. On the rock wall, there are 127
engravings of people and animals that date to the
late Neolithic.

Manunggul Jar
Manunggul Jar was discovered in Manunggul Cave at
Lipuun Point in Palawan in the early 1960s. An early
Filipino belief in life after death is symbolized by the
Manunggul jar, a type of burial jar.

Banga
Banga literally translates to "pots." The Kalinga people
of the Philippines' Mountain Province perform the
Banga, also known as the pot dance. This dance
displays the Igorot tribe's graceful elegance as well as
the talent and power of women.
Spanish Colonial Tradition
The colonizers utilized art as a way to spread the
Catholic religion through beautiful paintings when the
Spaniards first landed in the Philippines in 1521.
The friars turned to images to convey Catholic doctrine
and narrate Christ's life and passion.
Art forms were primarily influenced by religion and
secularization.

Langit, lupa, at Impierno

Josef Luciano Dans (1805–ca. 1870), one of the
earliest known painters in Philippine art history, left two
pieces in the church in Paete, Laguna. Lupa, Langit at
Impierno about. A three-level picture from 1850 called
Heaven, Earth, and Hell features the Holy Trinity, Mary,
the Mother of Jesus, saints, the Seven Blessed
Sacraments, and a gruesome representation of Hell.

Cathedral
Burgos, Vigan City, Ilocos Sur is home to St. Paul Metropolitan
Cathedral. The first building was constructed in 1574 and was
replaced as a church in 1641. The cathedral is built in a Baroque
style.

What is Contemporary Arts?
Arts experts date the emergence of contemporary art
to the late 1970s, around the beginning of
postmodernism in the west.
Contemporary art of the 21st century may combine
elements of performance, painting, sculpture, dance,
and many other media.
Art produced at the present period in time includes and
develops from postmodern art, which is itself a
successor to Modern art.

1. Visual Arts
These include visible forms of art like painting, sculpture, printing,
photography, and cinema.
Visual art is another term that is frequently used to describe design
and textile work.
The visual arts have evolved over time. Visual art today can take
many diverse forms.
2. Literature
It is a writing or group of writings. More specifically, literature refers to
any piece of writing that is considered to be an art form or to have
artistic or intellectual worth, and occasionally uses language in ways that
are different from everyday usage.
3. Music
Pinoy Pop, or Filipino pop music, emerged as Philippine music
continued to flourish. Jazz, dance hits, folk songs, revival songs, rock
and roll, rap, and other genres are all covered by Filipino pop. Eventually,
Original Pilipino Music (OPM) gained popularity.
4. Theater
Theater is a collaborative style of performing art in which actors or
actresses utilize live performance to portray the experience of a real or
imagined event before a live audience in a particular setting,
sometimes a stage.
5. Dance
The history of Filipino folk dance is not the history of only one or two
national dances. Due to the influence of religion and culture, dances have
developed from many geographical locations that are unique
from one another.
6. Architecture
The Philippine architecture was characterized as simple, rational, and
functional in the early 20th century of the young Filipinos who studied in
American universities and institutes were back to the country and
brought changes in the Philippine architecture.
7. Film
A film, also known as a movie,
motion picture, moving picture,
picture, or photoplay, is a work
of visual art that uses moving
images to replicate experiences
or otherwise convey ideas, tales,
perceptions, feelings, beauty, or
ambiance.
