Productions and operation management

1. Introduction
Production/operations management is the process, which combines
and transforms various resources used in the production/operations
subsystem of the organization into value added product/services in a controlled
manner as per the policies of the organization. Therefore, it is that part of an
organization, which is concerned with the transformation of a range of inputs into the
required (products/services) having the requisite quality level.

The set of interrelated management activities, which are involved

in manufacturing certain products, is called as production management. If the same
concept is extended to services management, then the corresponding set of
management activities is called as operations management.

2. Production and operation functions

1. Quality control
Quality control involves testing units and determining if they are within the
specifications for the final product. The purpose of the testing is to determine
any needs for corrective actions in the manufacturing process. Good quality
control helps companies meet consumer demands for better products.

2. Maintance of machinery
Machinery maintenance involves regular servicing of equipment, routine
checks, repair work, and replacement of worn or nonfunctional parts.
Machines to be maintained include both heavy-duty industrial equipment and
simple hand-operated machines

3. Process design

The definition of product design describes the process of imagining, creating,

and iterating products that solve users' problems or address specific needs
in a given market.

4. Raw material management

Purchasing, receiving, storing and transporting raw materials for the
production of samples can be very labor intensive. In addition to the labor
cost, these tasks also increase the time it takes to replenish your material
swatches and sales literature.
5. Production plainng
Production planning is the act of developing a guide for the design and
production of a given product or service. Production planning helps
organizations make the production process as efficient as possible.

6. Production control
Production control is the task of predicting, planning and scheduling work, taking
into account manpower, materials availability and other capacity restrictions, and
cost so as to achieve proper quality and quantity at the time it is needed

3. Manufacturing Systems

MANUFACTURING SYSTEMS
Manufacturing system is the framework with in
which the conversion of input in to output occurs

A manufacturing system can be defined as the

arrangement and operation of machines, tools,
material, people and information to produce a value-
added physical, informational or service product
whose success and cost is characterized by
measurable parameters.
4. Differences Between Manufacturing and Service Operations

Labour intensive
Accurate measurement of quality and quantity is not easy
Differ as per customer needs
Intangible, perishable products
Ownership not transferable
Output cannot be inventoried
Require small facilities
High customer involvement

Manufacturing
Capital intensive
Accurate measurement of quality and quantity is easy
Standard product
Tangible, durable products
Transfer of ownership
Output can be inventoried
Require large facilities
Low customer involvement

5. Functions of Production and Operations Manager

1. Maintaining relations with the suppliers

2. Maintanance and repair of machinery

3. Production process decisions

4. Quality and quantity control
