Geomorphology can be defined as the science of the romance of the earth's face and the aspects

that affect it including description, classification, Ganesa, development and history of the earth's
surface.

The word geomorphology (gheomorfology) comes from Greek, which consists of three words
namely: geos (earth, morphos (shape), logos (knowlodge or science). Based on these words, the
definition of geomorphology is the knowledge of the shape of the earth's surface.

Lobek (1939) in his book "gheomorphology": An introduction to the study of landscapes''.

Landscapes are meant to be natural landforms (natural lanscapes). In describing and interpreting the
shape of the landscape (landform or landscapes) there are three factors that are considered in
studying geomorphology, namely structure, process and stadia. These three factors are a unity in
studying geomorphology.

Worcester (1939) defines geomorphology as the description and interpretation of the roman form of
the earth's face. Worcester's definition is broader than just the science of landforms, because it
includes a discussion of earth events in general, such as the formation of ocean basins and
continental platforms, as well as the form of smaller structures than those mentioned above, such as
plain, plateau, mountain and so on.

The first studies of geomorphology were pedology studies, one of the two branches of soil science.
Landforms are responses to a combination of natural and anthropogenic processes. Landforms are
formed through tectonic uplift and vocalism, while denudation occurs through erosion and mass
wasting. The result of the denudation process is known as a source of sedimentary material that is
then transported and deposited on land, coasts and oceans. Landscapes can also experience
subsidence through ambient events caused by tectonic processes or as a result of physical changes
that occur under sedimentary deposits. These processes occur and are influenced by differences in
climate, ecology and human activities.

Geomorphology can also be drawn as a science that studies changes in the shape of the earth's face
and is generally defined as the study of nature, which includes the general shape of the earth's
surface romance and changes that occur throughout its evolution and its relationship with the state
of the structure below, as well as the history of geological changes shown or reflected in the shape
of the surface.

In Indonesian, many people use the word landscape as a translation of geomorphology, so the word
geomorphology as a science can be translated into landscape science.

The sciences that are closely related to geomorphology are mainly earth sciences, including:

Physiography

Physiography originally included the study of atmosphere, hydrology and landscape and the study of
these three objects generally developed in Europe, while geomorphology is one of the branches of
physiography.

Geology

Has a broader object of study than geomorphology, because it includes the study of the entire
earth's crust, while geomorphology is only limited to the study of the surface of the earth's crust.
Therefore, geomorphology is considered a branch of geology and later in its development
geomorphology became a separate science, independent of geology.
Meteorology and climatology,

The study of the physical state of the atmosphere and climate. Weather conditions such as wind,
lightning, humidity, and climate change can have a profound effect on the shape of the earth's
landscape.

Hydrology

The science of the waters of the earth, including water in rivers, lakes, oceans and underground
water. Knowledge of hydrology will also help in studying geomorphology.

Geography

Has a broader object of study than geomorphology, because it includes aspects of the physical and
social aspects of the earth's surface. While geomorphology emphasizes the shape of the shapes
found on the earth's surface. Geography emphasizes its study on 'space oriented' which can show
where and how the distribution of landscape forms and why the distribution is so.
