IV. Solve the following problems. Show your solutions. Use the available space of your test paper. Round off your final
answer to whole number. (10 points each item)

1. Four points charges of q= 2.50 x 10 -6 C are situated at the corners of a square of side 1.00 m. Find the resultant force
that a charge of -3.0 x 10 -6 C will experience when placed at the center of the square?

2. A metal sphere of radius 10 cm carries a charge of +2.0 µC uniformly distributed over its surface. What is the
magnitude of the electric field due to its sphere at a point of 5.0 cm outside the sphere’s surface?

3. equal charges of 3.00 x 10 -9 C are situated at the three corners of a square of side 5.20 m. Find the potential at the
unoccupied corner.

4. Explain how a charged plastic comb can attract pieces of paper. Does this contradict Coulumb’s Law? Why is it
difficult to demonstrate during humid day?

Whenever a negatively or positively charged comb is located closer to a neutral sheet of paper, it repels or attracts
the electrons in the paper, depending on the comb charge. The side of the paper facing the comb is always opposite
the charge on the comb and thus experiences an attracting force. This does not contravene Coulomb’s law. There
are indeed attractive and repulsive forces at work, however Coulomb’s rule states that the stronger the charge feels
the stronger the force. On a humid day, there is a lot of water in the air as individual molecules. Even though water is
a polar molecule, the positively charged side of the water molecules is drawn to the excess negative charge and
appears to take those electron.
