COMPUTERAIDED DRAWING (AutoCAD 2011)

With the help of special software drawing or drafting can be done using computers.
The process of constructing the drawings on the computer screen is called computer
aided drafting(CAD). The drawings in CAD are clearer and more exact than manual
drawings. AutoCAD is a particular CAD software where the user enters the data in
command form which is then converted into graphics.

The window of AutoCAD contains the following:

1. Pull down Menu bar. 2. Standard tool bar. 3. Draw tool bar
4. Modify tool bar 5. Layer tool bar 6. Properties toolbar
7. Drawing Area 8. Crosshair cursor 9. Command line
10. Command window 11. UCS Icon 12. Status bar

creates a smooth curve that passes through fit points or near control vertices.
Click on the Spline icon in the draw toolbar
or Menu → Draw → spline
or Command : spline

TEXT
To write text on the drawing text or mtext command is used. Text command creates
single line text object. Mtext command creates multiline text paragraph, using Text
Formatting dialog box and in place text editor, where font typeface, font style, font size
etc. can be edited.
Menu → Draw → Text→ Single Line Text
or Command: text

Click on the MultilineText Icon in the draw toolbar

Menu → Draw → Text→ Single Line Text
or Command: mtext or mt or t
In Text Formatting dialog box that appears after the last command one can choose
from the various options given. You can also change the size of the text area by
moving the ruler head. Click the OK button when finished.

MODIFY TOOLBAR OR MODIFY MENU ON MENU BAR:

Object Selection: Objects need to be selected to modify them. When any modify
command is applied the crosshair cursor changes to a square cursor and one have to
click on an object or use selection window to select it.
In general AutoCAD selection windows are of two types – crossing window and
box. While selecting objects if the cursor is moved from right to left you get a
crossing window (highlighted by green colour) which selects the objects that it
crosses. If the cursor is moved from left to right you get a box (highlighted by blue
colour) which selects the objects that it encloses. The selected objects show blue
coloured square boxes (called grips) on them.

CHANGING THE PROPERTIES:

The properties (Colour, Linetype, Lineweight) of the object can be changed using the
Properties toolbar. Select the object, open the color control or linetype control or
lineweight control combo box and select the required option.
Alternatively you can use: Menu → Format → Color (to open Select Color dialog
box) or Menu → Format → Linetype (to open Linetype Manager dialog box) or
Menu → Format → Lineweight (to open Lineweight Settings dialog box).
Select Color dialog box, linetype Manager dialog box and Lineweight Settings
dialog box may also be opened by using commands: color, ltype and lweight
respectively.

To see the chosen lineweight, turn on LWT button on Status bar. You may need to
change Linetype scale to see the chosen linetype properly by using the command:
ltscale (it enables you to set a new linetype scale factor).
The properties of the object can also be changed using Properties palette. The palette
may be made visible by any of the following ways:
Click on the Properties icon in the Standard toolbar
or Menu → Tools → Properties
or double click on the object
or select the object then right click and select Properties from shortcut menu
or Command: properties or props or mo or ch
The Properties palette lists the current settings for properties of the selected object or
set of objects. When more than one object is selected, the Properties palette displays
only those properties common to all objects in the selection set. You can modify any
property that can be changed by specifying a new value.

DIMENSIONING:
Dimensioning is very easy in AutoCAD. Length of a line, radius/diameter of an arc
or a circle and angle between lines are automatically calculated.
DIMSCALE
It is a system variable that sets the overall scale factor applied to dimensioning
variables that specify sizes, distances, or offsets.
Command: dimscale
Enter new value for DIMSCALE <1.0000>: value (for e.g. 20)

DISPLAY COMMANDS:

ZOOM Realtime increases or decreases the apparent size of objects in the
current viewport. If the cursor is dragged upwards magnification increases
and if it is dragged downward magnification decreases.
ZOOM All displays either the user-defined grid limits or the drawing extents,
whichever view is larger.

Command: Pan or P
The cursor changes to a hand cursor. Left click the mouse, hold and drag the cursor.
The cursor is locked in its current location relative to the view port co-ordinate
system and the display screen moves in the same direction as the cursor.

REDRAW
Command: redraw or r
During the drawing and editing process, an operation may cause an object to
partially disappear. Redraw refreshes the display in the current viewport and
restore such obscured objects.

REGENERATE
Command: regen (regenauto to turn on or off automatic regeneration of drawing)
Regen command is used to regenerate the entire drawing and recomputed screen
coordinates for all objects in the current viewport. It corrects the geometry of the
zoomed circles/arcs, removes marker blips (point marks) and restores the point
sizes. Regen command may be used after zoom command.
STATUS BAR BUTTONS:
The status bar displays the coordinate values of the cursor and drawing tools in the
form of buttons. Tools can be turned on or off by clicking on the buttons on the
status bar.
Grid display button: Grid creates a rectangular pattern of dots or lines that
covers the drawing area. The grid serves as a reference to align objects and to
visualize the distances.
Object snap button : Object snap is used to specify precise locations on objects
such as end points of lines or centre of circle etc. During a draw command,
when the curser moves over an existing object snap markers are displayed.
Ortho mode button: Ortho mode compels the cursor to draw only horizontal
or vertical lines. If isometric snap is on then the cursor draws lines only along
isometric axes.
Dynamic input button: Dynamic input provides a command interface near
the cursor to help in keeping the focus on drafting area. Tooltips display
information which is dynamically updated as cursor moves.

Development
Problem 1: A cylinder of base 40 mm diameter and 55 mm long axis is resting on its
base on H.P. It is cut by a section plane perpendicular to the V.P. and inclined at an
angle of 45 to the H.P. intersecting the axis at a distance 35 mm above base. Draw
the development of surfaces of the cut solid.

Problem 2: Develop the lateral surfaces of a pentagonal pyramid of base edges 30

mm and height 60 mm, resting on its base on H.P.

Problem 3: Develop the surface of a truncated cone of 40 mm diameter base and

height 60 mm, resting on its base on H.P. It is cut by a cutting plane perpendicular to
the V.P. and inclined at an angle of 45 to the H.P., intersecting the axis 35 mm above
the base.

Section
Problem 1: A hexagonal pyramid of base 30 mm side, axis 70 mm long is resting on
its base on H.P. with two edges parallel to the V.P. It is cut by a cutting plane
perpendicular to the V.P. and inclined at an angle of 45 to the H.P. intersecting the
axis at a distance 25 mm above the base. Draw front view, sectional top view,
sectional side view and true shape of the section.
