Assessment 1 and Quadratic & Cubic Polynomials

1. (a) Calculate the exact value of y, given that:

(i) y = (log3 4) (log4 5) (log5 6) (log7 8)⋯(log26 27)[6 marks]

(2) (3) (4) (9) ( 10 )

1 2 3 8 9
(ii) y = log10 + log10 + log10 + ⋯ + log10 + log10 [3 marks]

(b) Solve for x and y, the simultaneous equations:

log (x − 1) + 2 log y = 2 log 3
log x + log y = log 6 [8 marks]
(c) By substituting y = log16 x or otherwise, solve for x, the equations:

log16 x = log16 x [6 marks]

6+ 2 6− 2
(d) Without the use of a calculator show that + = 4 [5 marks]
6− 2 6+ 2

2. The model P = represents the proportion of new and old foreign used cars
1 + 21.7e −0.16t
with a CNG kit installed in Trinidad and Tobago. Let t = 0 represent 1998.
(i) What proportion of new and foreign used cars had a CNG kit in 1998? [1 mark]
(ii) Determine the maximum proportion of new and foreign used cars that have a CNG kit.
[2 marks]
(iii) Sketch the graph of P vs t. [3 marks]
(iv) When will 40 % of new and foreign use cars have CNG kits? [2 mark]

3. (a) The roots of the cubic equation x 3 + 3px 2 + qx + r = 0 are 1, − 1 and 3. Find the values of
the real constants p, q and r. [ 7 marks]
(b) The roots of the quadratic equation: 2x 2 + 4x + 5 = 0 are α and β. Without solving the
equation
(i) write down the values of α + β and αβ [2 marks]
(ii) calculate:
i. α 2 + β 2 [2 marks]
ii. α 3 + β 3 [4 marks]
