Nice start! Now, let’s get into the discussion to further enrich your knowledge.

4
WARM UP
As said by many experts, listening is the most neglected
macro skill in English. For sure, you have experienced failing
or being in trouble just because you did not listen well. In
the concept map below, cite an instance in your life when
you failed to listen critically and indicate its effects to you.
Reflect on your learning from this experience afterwards.

My Learnings from this Event

Motive Questions:

1. Why is listening an important skill to develop?

________________________________________________________________________________

2. How can analytical listening help you solve problems?

5
DIG IN
Listening is the process of receiving, constructing meaning
from, and responding to a spoken message. Since this
module aims to help you develop analytic listening, let us
try to study first the different types of listening and the
different guidelines in listening analytically.

DIFFERENT TYPES OF LISTENING

1. Appreciative Listening
This type of listening is used to listen for pleasure and enjoyment. This is
used when you listen to music, to a comedy routine, or to an entertaining
speech The focus of this type of listening is speaker’s choice of words, humor,
stories, and banters.
2. Emphatic Listening
Emphatic listening aims at providing emotional support for the speaker,
as when a psychiatrist listens to a patient or when a person lends a sympathetic
ear to a friend. This type of listening focuses on understanding and identifying a
person’s situation, feelings, or motives where there is an attempt to understand
what the other person is feeling.
Also, the listener does not necessarily agree or feel the same way with the
speaker, instead he/she understands the type and intensity of feelings the
speaker is experiencing without judgement
3. Comprehensive / Active Listening
This is listening to understand the message of a speaker just like attending
a classroom lecture or listening to directions for finding a friend’s house. Here,
the listener focuses on accurately understanding the meaning of the speaker’s
words while simultaneously interpreting non-verbal cues such as facial
expressions, gestures, posture, and vocal quality.
To do this, you have to listen carefully by using all available senses,
paraphrase what is heard both mentally and verbally, check your
understanding to ensure accuracy and provide feedback.
4. Critical/ Analytical Listening
This type of listening is used to evaluate a message for purposes of
accepting or rejecting it. For instance, you listen to the sales pitch of a sales
person, take an promo call from a telecommunication company, or listen to a
friend justifying his action, you exercise this type of listening where you focus on
evaluating whether a message is logical and reasonable.
Further, you also make judgements based on your evaluation of the
speaker’s arguments considering its accuracy and meaningfulness. This is why
this type of listening is the most difficult to do because it solicits much of higher-
order thinking skills.
In employing analytical listing effectively, you also need to be familiar
with explicit and implicit signals to make the right judgments.

6
IMPLICIT AND EXPLICIT SIGNALS
Explicit signals are the specific information conveyed in written or spoken
words. These are the things that are said or written in words. Since it is explicit, the
words are clearly and directly stated.
On the other hand, implicit or non-verbal signals are those expressed
without words, only visual cues. You "give off" messages through gestures, body
language, facial expressions, tone and vocal qualities, and eye contact. Thus the
message is not directly stated but it is implied or hinted.
In the context of listening, the only implicit signal that is used is the voice. The
way in which a message is spoken is as important as what is said. The timing and
pace, how loud you speak, tone and inflection can indicate anger, sarcasm,
affection or confidence.

FOLLOW UP
Let’s try to recall your learnings from this lesson. Identify
what type of listening is being portrayed in the following
situations. Choose your answer form the box. Write the

MINDS ON
Now that you are familiar with the different types of
listening and the explicit and implicit signals, let us try the
following task.

A. Listen to the song, “Let it Go” from the movie, “Frozen” by visiting the link below.
After listening, fill out the chart that follows. For those who cannot access the link, a
copy of the lyrics of the song is also here. Make sure however to ask someone else
to read or sing the lyrics for you.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L0MK7qz13bU.

Let it Go lyrics It's funny how some distance makes everything seem
small
The snow glows white on the mountain tonight And the fears that once controlled me can't get to me at
Not a footprint to be seen all
A kingdom of isolation It's time to see what I can do
And it looks like I'm the queen To test the limits and break through
The wind is howling like this swirling storm inside No right, no wrong, no rules for me
Couldn't keep it in, heaven knows I've tried I'm free
Don't let them in, don't let them see Let it go, let it go
Be the good girl you always have to be I am one with the wind and sky
Conceal, don't feel, don't let them know Let it go, let it go
Well, now they know You'll never see me cry
Let it go, let it go Here I stand and here I stay
Can't hold it back anymore Let the storm rage on
Let it go, let it go My power flurries through the air into the ground
Turn away and slam the door My soul is spiraling in frozen fractals all around
I don't care what they're going to say And one thought crystallizes like an icy blast
Let the storm rage on I'm never going back, the past is in the past
The cold never bothered me anyway
Let it go
Let it go, let it go The cold never bothered me anyway
Can't hold it back anymore Let it go, let it go
Let it go, let it go And I'll rise like the break of dawn
Turn away and slam the door Let it go, let it go
Let it go (go, go, go go, go go, go go, go, go, go That perfect girl is gone
go) Here I stand in the light of day
Let the storm rage on
Let it go
Let it go
Let it go

Transcript:
When people say or do things that hurt or shame others, that's bullying.
When you exclude and ignore them, that's bullying.
Now experts tell us that it's the bystander who can really help. That's you and me.
Most people simply look away, but some even watch while it's happening. Now that's the
worst possible thing that we can do.
Bullying has to stop and you can make a difference.
So, what can we do?
Stand up for the victim. but if you can't, at least speak out about it and get some help.
Most of all, we have to stand by the victims because they need our sympathy and our
support.
And together, we can stop bullying.
take the challenge and the pledge.
I will not be bully.
I will help the bullied.
I will speak up against bullying.
It's time to take a stand. Not in our school
