Subject: PHILOSOPHY OF VALUES AND ETHICS IN EDUCATIONAL LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT

Name of Professor: Dr. Cesar San Jose
Name of Student: Cristine Q. Gorubat

1. Are men born evil or made evil? How does family background becomes significantly
crucial and important in the formation of one’s values and ethical living?

While many of the philosophers presented different perspectives on this

concept like Aristotle who “argued that morality is learned, and that we’re born
as “amoral creatures” while Sigmund Freud considered new -borns a moral
blank slate”, I believe that human is created by God with equal opportunities
to choose how would they become as they take the path of this ever
changing society.
I was totally surprised with what I learned in the video of interviews
conducted with the different personalities who committed such unbelievable
crimes. While I was attentively listening to their answers, I have heard no
hesitations, regrets, shame, and guilt with what they have done but I felt
their ambitious pride of proving themselves that what they did were just
supposed to happen.
Aileen Wuornors was the first female serial killer who killed 7 men,
and 7 strangers and yet, was even proud of herself. For her, she did the
right thing, she did not do anything wrong, and she was totally blown out
her mind. The second person was Angela Simpson who was also proud of
murdering a disabled man. When she was asked “you tortured him?” she
proudly answered “yes, of course!”, something that would really upset the
viewers even the immediate family of the victim. Third, was Richard Ramirez
who believed that all human are evil. He honoured nobody as he had raped
and killed 13 people including an innocent nine year old girl and a 79 year
old woman. Next, was Paris Bennet, a 13 year old kid who killed her baby
sister with 17 times stabbed wounds. And the last interview was about
Arthur Shawcross who was sentenced to 25 years for murdering two (2)
people. When he was given the parole, he killed 11 more people. He even
told the interviewer that he felt like a celebrity of doing such crimes,
unbelievable!
Their answers were really disturbing to my ears, but I was also
curious of why those actions happened? Why they exhibit such kind of
behaviours? What made them to commit worst decisions that affect their
lives and other lives? Were they born evil? Or made evil because of the

circumstances? I found the answers by tracking down their childhood
experiences, unhealthy pasts, and family backgrounds. Like Paris Bennet,
he was the only child for the longest time. He gets the love, care, and
attention from everybody around him. His mother was even hands-on on
him until his sister Ella became in their lives. Everything was changed. He
felt unloved, lost attention from the crowd, and felt isolated for him to be
diagnosed physcopath. Aillen also had a difficult experience as her
grandfather sexually assaulted her. At the age of 11 she was already
exposed in sexual activities for drugs and food. On the other hand, Angela
was diagnosed with mental illness at the age of 10. Richard also experienced
violence in the family and was influenced by his cousin who was known for
murdering 20 women in Vietnam.

These personalities have terrible experiences that made them evil

as they grow old. Their childhood must supposed to be the happiest
moments in their lives where they can just imagine themselves playing in
the ground, bonding with their family members, and friends, and receiving
enough care, love and attention from their parents . Because love, care,
attention and discipline must start at home. Parents play important roles
and responsibility of protecting their children, providing a healthy
environment for growth, directing to a path which will exhibit their good
values and personalities, molding them into a better person, and imposing
proper discipline in which they will easily recognize the right from wrong. If
a child was raised in a God-Fearing environment, a room for equal
opportunities to express their feelings, and a place where they can improve
themselves to be better, then, they would always choose a path of
goodness. They would see every struggle and challenge in their character
as an avenue to learn and relearn.

Indeed, it was not easy to build a home. There comes a time when
parents are struggled with disciplining their children because of the drastic
changes brought by this new generation. But, it would also be a game
changer for the parents who provide their children a room for erorrs then
process the mistakes as an important event in changing their lives, to be
better.

Thus, human are not born evil. They are made evil. God made us
because of his love for us. We are all equal in his eyes. We are all made out
of love. There is no such thing as “evil” if we will spread love to this world.
This leghten season is a reminder of God’s love. A great time and
opportunity to reflect and be grateful of the life and things we owe from
him. We may experiencing diffulties in life, let us not forget that in God’s
difficult times in the cross, he stood still and offered his life to save us from
evil.
