Learning Competency: Explain how the respiratory and circulatory system work together to transport
nutrients, gases, and other molecules to and from the different parts of the body (S9LT-1a-b-26).

Key Concepts: THE HUMAN RESPIRATORY AND CIRCULATORY SYSTEM

Respiratory system is a series of organs responsible for taking in oxygen and expelling carbon dioxide.

Respiratory system extracts oxygen from the air and it

moves in and out of the lungs through the nose and/or
mouth, down to trachea, bronchi, and bronchioles and
lastly to the alveoli where gas exchange occur.

Oxygen is then carried by the blood vessels to be

distributed to the whole body by the heart.

Circulatory system is made up of heart which pumps the blood

throughout the body, blood vessels that carry blood throughout the body
and is comprise of the arteries that carry oxygenated blood away from the
heart, veins that carry deoxygenated blood to the heart and the capillaries
the smallest blood vessels where the actual exchange of gases and
nutrients happened and lastly the blood that carries the materials
throughout the body.

Oxygen taken in from the respiratory system moves in and out of

the lungs through the pulmonary arteries and veins that are connected to
the heart and then circulate the oxygen-rich blood to the tissues and cells
of different parts of the body.

The circulatory system is very useful. This system transports the food nutrients, and oxygen to the body cells.
It also delivers of carbon dioxide and waste products. This helps the respiratory system by transporting nutrients to
keep the lungs clean, and healthy.

Possible Answers
nose/nasal passages - trachea - bronchi - bronchioles - alveoli
Heart, blood vesse ( arteries, veins, capillaries), blood
The respiratory system extracts oxygen from the surroundings through the nose and mouth. Oxygen then travels to the lungs, into the alveoli in exchange of carbon
dioxide. Oxygen is then carried by the blood vessels to be distributed to the body by the heart together with other nutrients needed by our body.
