1. Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions.

Oliver Twist is a novel written by Charles Dickens, one of England's great

novelists. Set in London slums of the nineteenth century, the story is about a
boy whose mother dies in a workhouse after giving birth to him.
Oliver spends the first nine years of his life in misery in an orphanage until he is
transferred to a workhouse for adults. Here, he is bullied into asking Mr.
Bumble, the supervisor, for more food. For this, Oliver is punished and sold to
Mr. Sowerbury, the undertaker who becomes very angry with Oliver.
To escape Mr. Sowerbury's anger, Oliver runs away and meets a pickpocket
named Jack also called the "Artful Dodger". Jack works for a man named Fagin,
a criminal who uses young boys like Jack to steal from rich people. Fagin sends
Oliver into the streets with two other boys. Oliver runs away when he sees
them stealing but is caught. Luckily, the victim of the theft, Mr Brownlow,
realizes that Oliver is quite sick. He takes Oliver home and nurses him back to
health. Oddly, Oliver resembles a young woman whose portrait hangs in the
house. Oliver's life is now very happy, but his adventures are not over.
Captured by Bill Sykes and Nancy, Oliver is forced to rejoin the gang. He is shot
when he and Bill are sent to burgle the house of Mrs. Maylie and her beautiful
niece, Rose. Bill escapes, but the ladies findand look after Oliver. They even
take him on a country holiday!
But Fagin and his accomplice, Monks, are displeased. They want to recapture
Oliver. Monks finds out that Oliver has his mother's gold locket. Knowing that
this could identify Oliver's mother, Monks finds and destroys the locket. Nancy
warns Rose that Fagin is after Oliver.
Rose reunites Oliver with Mr. Brownlow and later, Mr. Brownlow forces Monks
to tell the truth about Oliver's background. Surprisingly, Monks is Oliver's
half-brother, and is determined to keep Oliver's half of their father's fortune
for himself. Oliver's mother, Agnes, died in poverty but his father, Mr.
Leeford, was very wealthy. Monks is forced to sign over half of the fortune to
