Episodic uterine bleeding in response to cyclic hormonal changes
Allows conception and implantation

Purpose: bring an ovum yo maturity and renew a uterine tissue bed

Physiology of Menstruation

Antetior Pituitary gland

Hypothalamus triggers APG which releases FSH (growth and maturation of the ovum) and then the
ovary releases estrogen for growth and maturation of uterus. Once the LH is triggered where there is
release of matured egg

PHASES OF MENSTRUATION

1. Proliferative/Estrogenic/Follicular (Day 5 - 14)

2.Secretory/Ovulation/Luteal/Progestational (Day 15 - 25 )

3. ISCHEMIC - corpua luteum dies and become corpus albicans (no fertilization) (Day 26 - 28)

4. Menstruation - release of menses (uterus sloughed off) (Day 1-4)

Average length: 28 days, longest cycle: 32-35
Average menstrual flow: shortest and longest: 1-9, standard: 2-7
Average amount: 30-80ml
