Transport Answers

1. What percentage of greenhouse gas emissions come from the transport sector?
Accept any value between 25.5% and 27.5%.

2. How do we know that the energy sector has been more successful at reducing greenhouse gas
emissions than the transport sector?
The energy sector has reduced emissions by 62% but the transport sector has only reduced
 them by 3%.

3. Explain the goal of the government’s Road to Zero strategy.

The goal is to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions from most cars and vans to zero by 2050.
This will reduce the impact that cars have on greenhouse gases in the atmosphere and slow

 down climate change.

4. Give two problems with relying on the use of electric cars.

 Any two from:
 • Producing the electricity for the cars also releases greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.

 • Making electric cars releases greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.

 • Disposing of the batteries damages the organisms in soil.

 • They are expensive so might contribute to transport poverty if not everybody can afford them.

5. Suggest why people might be more likely to drive a car than use public transport.
The cost of driving a car is typically lower than the cost of public transport. Cars are more
convenient than public transport and usually a faster option. Some houses are in areas where

public transport is not a practical option.

6. Explain what needs to be considered when developing public transport networks to ensure that
transport choices improve for all people.
Public transport needs to be affordable for all people.

All neighbourhoods need to be accessible by public transport.

Public transport needs to run regularly so that people can rely on it to get them where they

 need to be on time.

These considerations will ensure that no groups of people are disadvantaged if the cost of
driving increases.
