TERM PAPER
SUMMARY:

The study of Ethics started with the Greek philosophers, notably

Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle. Socrates is regarded as the father of
moral philosophy. Ethics is the study of man as moral being, one who
is rationally able to distinguish between right and wrong. It proposes
how man ought to live his life meaningfully.

Art provides for what is orderly and harmonious in an artwork. Ethics

is an art, ‘’ the art of correct living ‘’ because it teaches how we may
put order and harmony in our lives. Every person is expected to be
decent and trustworthy, and since moral integrity as attested by
people is the true measure of man’s greatness, some philosophers
regard Ethics as “ the only necessary knowledge “ . Morality is not
only necessary to a person but also to society. Filipinos believe in
moral integrity as essential to life. Ethics is what guides us to tell the
truth, keep our promises, or help someone in need. There is a
framework of ethics underlying our lives on a daily basis, helping us
make decisions that create positive impacts and steering us away from
unjust outcomes.

SYNTHESIS:

Ethical norms, however, cover thoughts and feelings so that a person

could sin because of what he thinks or desire. Thus, St.Paul says a
man who lusts after a woman is committing adultery. Moral norms
require proper spiritual disposition towards what is lawful. It is not
sufficient to do good, one must be sincere in doing what is good.

POSITIVE REACTION:

The theistic approach to which we adhere, assumes that God is the

Supreme Lawgiver and I agree with it because God is so powerful,
nothing can compare. Everything must conform to God’s eternal plan
of creation. Man can exercise his freedom in accordance with God’s
will. We are accountable for our actions and deserves either a reward
or punishment in this life. Ethics has a spiritual dimension. We have
an inner sense of right and wrong, that is why we feel guilt and
shame.

NEGATIVE REACTION:
Unhealthy values include dishonesty/lying to others, manipulation
and force, overindulgence in something, always feeling good, always
being liked, attention-seeking. There are also people who abuse the
goodness of God that’s why they keep on doing sin even if they know
that it’s not pleasing in the eyes of God just like for example doing
fornication, lust of the flesh, and having another woman/man even if
that person is already married.

CONCLUSION:

People need some sort of a moral guide through life. Many may think
that they can get by without one but chances are that they are egoists
and do have a principle which is guiding them. ‘’If it makes me feel
good, if it makes me happy, if I like it and can live with it then it is all
right for me to do it.’’ That may seem like an attractive principle by
which we can make decisions until one starts to think about it. As a
guide for all people that principle would lead and does lead to many
conflicts. What is needed in a moral code is something that will enable
humans to live with one another in an order rather than in chaos of
self-interested action. Ethics is about character -- the sum of qualities
that defines a person. These qualities include a person’s intellect,
thoughts, ideas, motives, intentions, temperament, judgment,
behavior, imagination, perception, emotions, loves, and hates. In
virtue ethics, character is all about what a well-intentioned person
with good character would do. Character counts, as the saying goes,
and it is the sum of who we are or what we stand for.
