THE SURGE OF COVID AFTER THE PHILIPPINE ELECTION

In the year 2020 Philippine government announces a local lockdown due to the increasing number of
COVID-19 cases. This results in a heavy toll on the livelihoods of the Filipinos. The Philippines has
3,685,222 confirmed cases from 2 January 2020 to 6 May 2022. As of 8 May 2022 the new recorded
Covid cases in Manila, Philippines are slightly lower than the average number of cases in the
previous weeks. But the Philippines is urged to prepare for the possible surge of new Covid cases.

According to OCTA Research, there is a possibility that the Covid cases will increase up to 500 to
1000 cases per day in NCR. And Department of Health (DOH) also seeing a possible increase in Covid
cases in the Philippines, because of the declining compliance of the Filipinos to the minimum public
health standards(MPHS). DOH said that the sub-technical Working Group on Data Analysis (sTWG
DA) and the Feasibility Analysis of Syndromic Surveillance using Spatio-temporal Epidemiological
Modeler for Early Detection of Diseases(FASSSTER) analysts determined that the decreases in MPHS
compliance of the Filipinos could convert into the increase of the number of new active cases in the
Philippines.

Due to the lower number of Covid cases, many Filipinos are declining to the MPHS. As if the
percentage of Filipinos declining to MPHS is still the same, the risk of getting infected with the virus
will increase. If Filipinos will strictly observe the minimum health protocols on top of getting
vaccinated and being up to date with their booster shot. The surge of Covid after the election will
not happen. And it will lower the number of transmissions and the possibility of the emergence of
variants. But, due to the increasing numbers of Filipinos declining with the health protocols and the
upcoming Philippine election the surge of Covid may happen.
