Lesson Visualizing the Perimeter

1 of any Given Plane Figure

in Different Situations

“To solve Math problems, you need to know the basic

Mathematics before you can start applying it.” By Catherine Asaro

Hi there my dear learner! This lesson is very simple yet very

vital to our succeeding lessons. So brace yourselves and let us have
fun in learning our new lesson on perimeter.

What’s In

To get started, let us first sing a song entitled “The Perimeter

Song” from this link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=85scoylaAks

Perimeter Song ( Tune Of Farmer in the Dell)

Perimeter is all around You add up all the sides

Perimeter is all around You add up all the sides
Oh, oh, dont you know You add up all the sides
Perimeter is all around You add up all the sides

As the song goes, we have to remember that Perimeter is all

around and we simply have to add all the sides of any given figure
and that is Perimeter.

3
What’s New

Grade 4 – Thoughtful of General Isidoro Torres is having an

activity about their new lesson on Perimeter. The teacher ask the
students if they know what perimeter is?

The teacher posted a big square cut-out on the board. She

asked students to trace the whole square figure. She explained
that the measurement of the sides of the square is its perimeter
because perimeter is the distance around a figure. The square has
4 equal sides so the measurement on one side can be added 4 times
or can also be multiplied by 4 to get its perimeter.

6cm

Perimeter = s + s + s + s or Perimeter = 4 x s
=6+6+6+6 =4x6
= 24 cm = 24 cm

What is It

7m

3m 3m

7m
What figure is shown in the illustration?
The figure is a Rectangle.

4
How many sides does it have?
It has 2 pairs of parallel sides. It has 4 sides in all.

If we are to get the perimeter of the figure, what do we need to do?

To get the perimeter of the rectangle we can simply add up all
the sides. Thus, P= 7 + 3 + 7 + 3 = 20 m

So, the perimeter of the rectangle is 20 m.

If I am going to build a small house with a triangular roof

measuring 10 cm on each side. What is the perimeter of the roof of
my small house?

10 cm on each side

Perimeter = Side1 + Side2 + Side3 = 10 + 10 + 10 = 30 cm

My trapezoidal garden looks like this

9m

8m 10 m

Perimeter = Side1+ Side2 + Side3 + Side4

Lesson Measuring the Perimeter of
any Given Figure Using
2 Appropriate Tools

“Measure what can be measured, and make measurable what

cannot be measured.” By Galileo Galilei
Yes my dear learner, this lesson will help you learn the art of
measuring figures and objects around us using appropriate tools.

What’s New

Kate wanted to put a lace on her handkerchief. She wanted

to find out how much ribbon
Look she
at the would
word need. What unit should
Kate use to measure the handkerchief? What tool would she
use?

Meters
inches
Miles
Feet
ruler
meter stick
Centimeters

A ruler is used to measure short

objects/distances, such as the length of
a desk.
What units can be measured when
you use this tool?

9
A meter stick measures in inches, feet or meters. A
football field measures in meters. You have to move a meter
stick 120 times to measure the length of a football field.

What tool and unit can Kate use to measure the perimeter
of her handkerchief? Is Kate measuring a short distance or a
long distance ?

6 in

8 in 8 in

6 in

Kate is measuring a short distance. Kate can measure in

inches using her ruler.
The measure of her handkerchief is 8 inches long and 6
inches wide. How will she get the perimeter of the handkerchief?
You simply add all the length of each side of the handkerchief to
get the perimeter.

8 + 6 + 8 + 6 = 28 inches.

Kate needs 28 inches of ribbon to put around her handkerchief.

10
What is It

The word perimeter has been derived from the Greek word
peri meaning around and metron which means measure.
Perimeter is the total length of the sides of a shape.

We often find the perimeter when putting up a fence around

a house, finding the total length of the vegetable garden, the length
of the ribbon required to cover a table mat or the distance covered
when you walk around the rectangular lot three times.

Example No. 1
A rectangular lot which is 12 meters long and 5 meters wide.
What is the appropriate tool I will use?
12 m

5m 5m

12 m

A. What is the measurement of its sides?

B. What is the distance around the figure?
C. How were you able to find the total distance around the figure?
D. Can you think of other ways to find the distance around the
figure?
E. What tool can you use in measuring the figure?
F. If you were to measure the actual size of your bedroom which
tool is more appropriate to use, is it the ruler or the meter
stick?

11
Example No.2

I have a Scalene Triangle that measures 14 cm, 36 cm, and

30 cm on its sides. What tool will you use to measure its perimeter?
What is its perimeter?

36 cm
14 cm P = 14 + 36 + 30
= 80 cm
30 cm

So, 80 cm is the perimeter of the Scalene Triangle. A ruler can

be used to measure centimeters.

Finding the Perimeter of
Lesson
Triangles, Squares,
3 Rectangles, Parallelograms
and Trapezoids
“I hear and I forget. I see and I remember. I do and I
understand.” By Confucius
This lesson my dear learner will bring you to mastery of this
entire module. Aside from the knowledge that measuring around a
figure gives you its perimeter, formulas are provided to guide and
lead you to better and easier way of finding the perimeter of
different figures.
Come on Learner! Let us enjoy doing the activities in this
lesson.

What’s New

Maria wants to stay fit and so she walks around the park
every day before going to school. What is the distance that Maria
covers every day?

18
How will you find the answer to this problem?

To solve for the answer to this problem, you add the

measurement of the sides of the park.

The park has four sides.

So, 55 m + 40 m + 65 m + 35 m = 195 m

So, Maria walks a distance of 195 m every day. This distance

around the park is called perimeter.

Can you think of other ways to find the perimeter of the park?

What is It

Let us study how to get the perimeter of the following figures using
a formula.
You can see the figures, the formulas are given and examples are
also provided for better understanding of the lesson.

I am a Rectangle I am a Triangle I am a Square

I am a Trapezoid I am a parallelogram

19
Figure Formula

P = 4 x s or s+s+s+s

P = 2 ( L + W ) or 2L + 2W

P=a+b+c

P=a+b+c+d

P = 2 ( b + h ) or (2 x b) + (2 x h)

7m

3m 3m

7m

P= 7m + 3m + 7m + 3m = 20m
So, the perimeter of the rectangle is 20m.
