What is the content knowledge?

Definition. Content knowledge refers to the

body of knowledge –facts, theories,
principles, ideas, vocabulary– which
teachers must master to be effective.
Teachers should have a deep
understanding of the subject they teach and
corresponding curriculum (subject content
knowledge).
Why is content knowledge important in
teaching?
Our own content knowledge affects
how we interpret the content goals
we are expected to reach with our
students. It affects the way we hear
and respond to our students and their
questions. It affects our ability to explain
clearly and to ask good questions.
