1. Wikipedia (2021) discussed that educational assessment or educational evaluation is the
systematic process of documenting and using empirical data on the knowledge, skill, attitudes, aptitude and beliefs to refine programs and improve student learning. Assessment data can be obtained from directly examining student work to assess the achievement of learning outcomes or can be based on data from which one can make inferences about learning. Assessment is often used interchangeably with test, but not limited to tests. Assessment can focus on the individual learner, the learning community (class, workshop, or other organized group of learners), a course, an academic program, the institution, or the educational system as a whole (also known as granularity). Assessment is not just a simple term it is vague, we have different types of assessment and different purposes of it.
2. Is assessment important in learning? Yes definitely. We have three purpose/process of
using assessment in learning. We have the assessment of learning, the purpose of the assessment here is to measure the competency of the learner or the knowledge acquire from teaching using different tools to measure it or the evaluation with feedback to the learners. The second one is assessment for learning happens during the learning process. Teachers used the assessment as an investigative tool find out what their student can do, confusions, or gaps they might have (Earl, 2006). Lastly the assessment as learning, this assessment focus on the students or peers. Students reflect on their work on a regular basis, usually through self and peer assessment and decide (often with the help of the teacher, particularly in the early stages) what their next learning will be. Assessment as learning helps students to take more responsibility for their own learning and monitoring future directions (Earl, 2006).
