Definition of Linear Equation f(x) = mx + b

A function is a linear function if and only if its

equation can be written in the form y = mx + b or
f(x) = mx + b, where m is the slope and b is the y-
intercept of the line. The graph is an non-vertical
straight line.

Graphing Equations in Two Variable
Step 1: Construct a table of values. Choose a reasonable value
for x and solve the equation for y. Repeat the steps several
times.
Step 2: Plot the points represented by the solutions to the
equation.
Step 3: Connect the points to form a line. Extend the line and
draw arrowheads on the ends to indicate the line extends to
infinity.
Example: Graphing Linear Equation Using a Solution Table

• Graph the equation

Solution:
Construct a table of Values.

x -2 -1 0 1 2
y 5 3 1 -1 -3
Graphing a linear Equation Using
Intercepts
Step 1: Find the x-intercept; Let y = 0. Solve the
equation for x.
Step 2: Find the y-intercept; Let x = 0. Solve the
equation for y.
Step 3: Plot and connect the intercept.
Example: Graphing Linear Equation Using a Intercepts
• Graph the equation using intercepts.
Solution:

Let y = 0, Solve for x.

Example: Graphing Linear Equation Using a Intercepts
• Graph the equation using intercepts.
Solution:
Let x = 0, Solve for y.

Plot and connect points (2,0) and (0,-3). Extend the line
through the points and draw arrows on the ends of the line
Graphing a Line in Slope-Intercept Form

Slope of a Line
The slope of a line is the ratio of the vertical change (rise) to the horizontal
changes (run).
If and are the coordinates of any two points on the same line, slope m of
that line is calculated using the formula:
Graphing a Line in Slope-Intercept Form

A linear equation written in the form f(x) = mx + b is

written in slope-intercept form, where m is the slope
of the line and b is the y-intercept.
.

In the equation, y = -23x + 4, the slope is -23 and the y-

intercept is 4
