GENERAL MAINTENANCE
General maintenance includes those items which should be checked during the normal day-to-day operation
of the vehicle. They are essential if the vehicle is to continue operating properly. The owners can perform the
checks and inspections themselves or they can have their NISSAN dealers do them.

Maintenance for off-road driving
Whenever you drive off-road through sand, mud or water as deep as the wheel hub, more frequent mainte-
nance may be required of the following items:

G Differential, transmission and transfer oil
G Steering linkage

(2) First replace at 80,000 km (48,000 miles) or 48 months, then every 60,000 km (36,000 miles) or 36 months.
(3) If engine power decreases, black smoke is emitted or engine noise increases, check and, if necessary, adjust
the fuel injection nozzle’s starting pressure and the fuel spray pattern.

Adjusting Intake and Exhaust Valve Clearance
Adjustment should be made while engine is warm but not
running. TF
1. Set No. 1 cylinder at top dead center on its compression stroke,
and adjust valve clearances q 1 ,q2 ,q3 ,q 6 ,q7 and q10 .
2. Set No. 6 cylinder at top dead center on its compression stroke, PD
and adjust valve clearances q 4 ,q5 ,q8 ,q 9 ,q11 and q
12 .

2. Open radiator drain cock at the bottom of radiator, and remove GI
radiator filler cap.
I Be careful not to allow coolant to contact drive belts.

5. Fill radiator with water and close radiator cap.
6. Run engine and warm it up sufficiently.
7. Race engine 2 or 3 times under no-load. TF
8. Stop engine and wait until it cools down.
9. Repeat step 2 through step 8 until clear water begins to drain
from radiator. PD
10. Drain water.

11. Close drain cock and tighten drain plug securely. FA

12. Open radiator cap.
13. Fill radiator with coolant up to specified level.
Follow instructions attached to anti-freeze container for mixing BR
ratio of anti-freeze to water.
For coolant mixture ratio, refer to MA-16.

Pour coolant through coolant filler neck slowly to allow air in
system to escape.
14. Remove reservoir tank, drain coolant, then clean reservoir tank. HA
15. Install reservoir tank and fill it with coolant up to “MAX” level and
then install radiator cap.
16. Run engine and warm it up sufficiently. EL
17. Race engine 2 or 3 times under no-load.
18. Stop engine and cool it down, then add coolant if necessary.
19. Start the engine. Increase engine speed from idle to approxi- SE
mately 2,000 rpm. Check that there is no heater core flowing
water noise coming from the heater unit under the instrument
panel.
SMA412B 20. If there is flowing water noise, repeat steps 16, 17 and 18 above IDX
until the noise stops.

CAUTION: GI
Tighten high-pressure rubber hose clamp so that clamp end is
3 mm (0.12 in) from hose end.
Tightening torque specifications are the same for all rubber
hose clamps.
Ensure that screw does not contact adjacent parts.

Changing Fuel Filter (TB45E)
WARNING:
Before removing fuel filter, release fuel pressure from fuel line TF
to eliminate danger.

1. Remove fuse for fuel pump.
2. Start engine.
3. After engine stalls, crank engine two or three times to make BR
sure that fuel pressure is released.
4. Turn ignition switch OFF and install fuse for fuel pump.

I Be careful not to spill fuel over engine compartment. Place
a shop towel to absorb fuel.

Drain plug:

I Use recommended engine oil.
4. Check oil level.
5. Start engine and check area around drain plug and oil filter for
oil leakage.
6. Run engine for a few minutes, then turn it off. After several
minutes, check oil level.

Checking and Changing Spark Plugs
1. Disconnect ignition wires from spark plugs at boot. Do not pull HA
on the wire.
2. Remove spark plugs with spark plug wrench.
3. Clean plugs in sand blast cleaner. EL
4. Check insulator for cracks or chips, gasket for damage or dete-
rioration and electrode for wear and burning. If they are exces-
sively worn away, replace with new spark plugs. SE

Checking Drive Belt (Cont’d)
1. Inspect for cracks, fraying, wear or oil adhesion. Replace if
necessary.
The belts should not touch the bottom of the pulley groove.
2. Check drive belt deflection by pushing on the belt midway
between pulleys.
Adjust if belt deflections exceed the limit.

4. Remove cylinder block drain plug located at left rear of cylin-
der block.
5. Drain coolant and install reservoir tank, cylinder block drain
plug and radiator drain plug.
6. Fill radiator with water and warm up engine.

a. If main spray angle is within 30 degrees as shown, injec-
tion nozzle is good.
b. It is still normal even if a thin stream of spray deviates from
main spray (pattern B).
4. If initial injection pressure or injection nozzle is not normal,
adjust or clean injection nozzle.
5. Test again. If it is not corrected, replace nozzle.
Refer to EC section for injection pressure adjustment, clean-
ing and replacement.

1. Inspect for cracks, fraying, wear or oil adhesion. Replace if BR

15. Remove the radiator filler cap and check coolant level.

16. Refill reservoir tank to Max line with coolant.
17. Repeat step 12 through step 16 two or more times.
18. Warm up engine, and check for sound of coolant flow while
running engine from idle up to 2,000 rpm with heater tempera-
ture control set at several positions between COOL and HOT.
I Sound may be noticeable at heater water cock.
19. If sound is heard, bleed air from cooling system by repeating
steps 12 through 16 until coolant level no longer drops.
I Clean excess coolant from engine.
