Part A. The Cost of Smoking

Smoking has been proven to be linked to most illnesses and diseases related to the respiratory and
circulatory systems.

This activity will help you understand the dangers of cigarette smoking.

In the Philippines, the most affordable price of a stick of cigarettes costs at around 5 pesos per stick. For
your first task, calculate the amount of money you will spend in the given scenarios.

Take Note: you may use another price point for this activity (other brands).

Part B. The Health Impacts of E-cigarettes

You may have noticed the growing number of your peers (friends, acquaintances, classmates)
use vape or e-cigarettes. But how much do you know about e-cigarettes and how they affect your
health?

Read the passage below and answer the follow-up questions after it.

The Hidden Truth*

Many teens and young adults got sick after using vaping products, including e-cigarettes. Patients
reported symptoms like the difficulty of breathing and chest pain. Some people ended up with
permanent lung damage and multiple people died. Based on the studies, use of vaping products can
seriously harm your health.

Delivering Dangerous Nicotine*

Toxic chemicals aren’t the only harmful thing that a person breathes in when they vape. Most vaping
devices, including all Juul models ( usb-like e-cigar filled with liquid)  contains nicotine.

This is the same highly addictive chemical found in other tobacco products like traditional tobacco
cigarettes and smokeless tobacco. In fact, all Juul pod contain as much nicotine as a whole pack of
cigarettes.
Dangers of Nicotine*

Nicotine causes changes in the brain that makes a person crave more of the drug “addiction”.

When someone vapes, nicotine gets into their bloodstream through their lungs and travels to their
brain within 10 seconds*. The brain then is tricked to release dopamine, a hormone that

Is known as “reward hormone” which makes a person feel good or pleasure when they vape or
smoke.

Teens Brain at Risk*

Teens and tweens (below 13) are more vulnerable to addiction since their brains are still developing.
Exposing adolescents to nicotine can affect their ability to focus, learn, and lower or slow down their
memory.

Studies also support that adolescents who vape are most likely to start smoking traditional cigarettes.

What Is Being Done?

Our government continues to warn our citizens about the dangers of cigarette smoking.

Cigarettes are not advertised on television.

Cigarette labels contain warnings in both print and graphic images.

What Should be Done?*

Stay Safe!

Some students say that they smoke or vape because their friends do - either to feel cool or because
they’re afraid to say no. What would you do if another kid offered you an e-cigarette? Here are some
ways to handle the pressure - and stay safe!

 Say “Pasensiya na, pero hindi ko gusto.”

 Make a joke or change the topic (Umiwas).

 Say that you are supposed to be somewhere and walk away (lumayo o umalis sa lugar).
 Talk to a friedn, parent or trusted adult.
