activities provided in this lesson will help you learn and understand:
Skimming to Determine Key Ideas.

PRETEST

Directions: Read each statement carefully. Write True if the statement is

correct, and False if not. Write the answer on the space before the number.

1. Skimming is a strategic reading method.

2. In skimming, you focus on all the details in the text.
3. In skimming, you should read very slowly.
4. To skim, you get the general idea or summary of a text.
5. To skim, we move our eyes rapidly through pages in reading.

RECAP

We have learned that we can easily determine the type of text we are
reading by identifying connectors used by the writer. Here are some points we
need to remember:
1. Expository texts tell and explain a certain topic, gives facts and shows
process. So, the paragraphs under expository type that show process
usually use sequential connectors.
2. Descriptive texts are where the author visualizes to you what he sees,
hears, tastes, smells and feels (or the 5 senses). The best way to
describe is by giving connectors such as in similar, equally, likewise and
through highlighting difference by using in contrast, unlike and instead.
3. Narrative novels, short stories, poetry and biographies can all fall into
the narrative writing category. Sequential connectors are frequently
used in narrative texts.
4. Persuasive writing is a type of writing which contains justifications and
reasons to make someone believe in what the author believes in so
connectors like thus, so, because, and therefore are often used in them.

LESSON

Skimming is a strategic, selective reading method in which you focus

on the main ideas of a text. It is the opposite of Scanning which is used to
read for specific information. When skimming, be deliberate and intentional
with what you choose to read. To Skim, we usually move our eyes rapidly
through the pages to get important or key ideas. It is not a lazy way out or a
half-hearted attempt at reading but another way to read if the purpose is to
get the general thought of the text.

Examples of Skimming
 Reading newspapers – to quickly get the general news of the day
 Reading magazines – to quickly discover which articles would you like
to read in more detail
 Reading business and travel brochures – to quickly get information
When to Use It?
1) When you need to know the overall sense or the main ideas of a text
2) When there are large amounts of reading text but limited time to review
it in detail
3) When you are seeking specific information rather than reading for
comprehension or pleasure
4) When it is necessary to find out if it should be read at all or in more
detail
5) When you need to know if a text may be of interest in one’s research

How to Use It?

1) Read the title, subtitles, and subheading to find out what the text is
about.
2) Look at the illustrations to give you further information about the topic.
3) Read the first and last sentences of each paragraph.
4) Don't read every word of every sentence. Let your eyes skim over the
text, taking in keywords.
5) Continue to think about the meaning of the text.

You must understand that there is no need to read every word when
skimming, so oftentimes, teachers set this as a timed task to encourage speed.

ACTIVITIES

Activity 1
Skim the passage below then answer the questions that follow. Write the letter
of the answer on the space before the number.
Faith in God requires us to Act
Jaime L. Waters
January 24, 2020

Today’s first reading and Gospel passage speak profoundly about the importance of
caring for people in need and being an example for others. These readings call on us to
offer support and inspire others to do the same. The reading from Isaiah comes from a
period after the Israelites’ return from exile in Babylon. The audience appears to be people
who are financially and physically able to care for their own needs. These people are called
on to care for others: share bread with the hungry, shelter the oppressed and the homeless,
clothe the naked, and welcome people in need (Is 58:7). These actions, which are echoed
in the corporal works of mercy, speak of perennial human needs. Paul’s emphasis on
God’s power can help us as we reflect on the readings from Isaiah and Matthew. All of
today’s readings urge us to act in the face of poverty, hatred, and injustice, and they
challenge us to put the needs of others on the same level as our own. We should remember
that our faith in God requires us to act. Our treatment of all people in society is a reflection
of our relationship with God.

This article also appeared in print, under the headline “Action required” in the February 3, 2020 issue.
