ICpEP General Assembly

During November 13, 2021, the ICpEP General Assembly was held virtually. It had a
theme of “Igniting Dreams. Seeking Opportunities. Breaking Limits” organized by the Institute
of Computer Engineers of the Philippines Region IVA (ICpEP-IVA).

The first event was the social interaction among the members and advisers. It was then
followed by the seminars of different Computer Engineering fields. This taught every participant
about GitHub and other stuff like freelancing that were discussed. Through that, many attendees
learned a lot in this webinar because of the seminars on different fields. Freelancing was
discussed by Engr. Mercado and he tackled the common freelance services in freelance sites.
These are data entry, virtual assistant, graphics design, web development, video editing, digital
marketing, and social media admin. The sites that were introduced to us are Upwork, Freelancer,
and Truelancer.

I learned the true definition of freelancing which is doing particular pieces of work for
different organizations, rather than working all the time for a single organization. This entails
providing services to companies on an as-needed basis, it usually has multiple companies, and is
self-employment. There are two types of freelancing; part-time and full-time. In part-time one
can accept smaller jobs with flexible deadlines and the projects can be done during one’s free
time. I full-time, one should dedicate their entire workday to one’s freelance jobs. There are
advantages and anxieties of freelance work. For the advantages: flexible schedule, higher income
potential, working from anywhere, and variety of projects. For the anxieties: managing a work-
life balance, unstable income, finding clients, and time management. To become a freelancer,
there are things to consider. These things include setting prices competitively and adjusting as
needed, building one’s digital presence, using quotation to clarify expectations, updating clients
regularly, and not being shy in requesting referrals. There are still many things that were
discussed and I have learned like the usual income depending on the work per se.

The next seminar was about Github. We were told that it was created by Linus Torvalds
in 2005 and is designed to do version control on Linux kernel. ‘Git’ means cranky old man and
Linus means himself. Apparently, there is Git and GitHub. The former was first developed in
2005. It is installed and maintained on one’s local system. It also has its branching model. The
latter, GitHub, is a designed as a Git repository hosting service. It is exclusively clous-based.
One can share their code with others, giving them power to make revisions or edits. Other things
that were discussed was the Git distributed version control system and versioning workflow.

Lastly, the Accenture was introduced to us. It is a global professional services company
with leading capabilities in digital, cloud and security. They also said that Accenture provides a
broad range of services at scale – from strategy to operation. There are the strategy and
consulting, interactive, technology, and operations. I also learned the skills needed for the future
in Accenture. These are analytical thinking and innovation, active learning and learning
strategies, creativity, originality and initiative, technology design and programming, critical
thinking and analysis, complex problem solving, leadership and social influence, emotional
intelligence, reasoning, problem solving and ideation, system analysis and evaluation.

Overall, the ICpEP General Assembly was very informative and the participants surely
learned a lot from this. It was also fun because through the social interaction and games,
somehow it ignited the minds of every participant before the webinar proper.
