ENGLISH WORKSHEET PAST

6TH FORM

SIMPLE

FORM
>> We make the past simple of regular verbs with the suffix ed.
e.g. They played football yesterday.
>> To make the negative we put the auxiliary verb did not (the short
form is didnt) before the main verb in its root form. The main verb
does NOT have the suffix -ed in the negative.
e.g. He didnt watch TV last night.
>> In short answers we use the personal pronoun and did or didnt.
We do not repeat the main verb.
e.g. Did you like the film?
Yes, I did.
No, I didnt.

SPELLING RULES
>> With the verbs ending in e, we only add d in the past simple
positive.
dance danced
like liked
>> With verbs endind in a consonant and y, the y goes and we add
ied.
cry cried
study - studied
With verbs ending in a vowel and y, ed add ed as usual.
play played
stay - stayed
>> With single-syllabled verbs ending in a vowel and a consonant, we
double the consonant and add ed.
stop + p = stopped
plan + n = planned

USE
>> We use the past simple to tlk about something that happened at a
specific time in the past.
She finished her homework an hour ago.
He visited Rome last year.
We watched a good film on TV last night.
We listened to music, we danced and then we opened our
presents.
>> We use the past simple with time phrases such as:
- last year, last month, last week, last Monday
