A tiered shelf unit makes the perfect stand for a pretty houseplant display. Choose matching pots for a contemporary look, or mix and match styles and colours for a more eclectic, country feel.

This attractive three-tiered shelf unit measures 25 7/8" high by 31 3/8" wide. The three shelves are 19 5/8", 13 3/8" and 7 1/8" deep respectively. The ends of the first three planks and the front of the first plank of each shelf are rounded with a router. Quarter round moulding with the same shaped curve is glued to the underside of all the parts finished with the router, to ensure harmony of forms and give the shelves a finished look. Instead of quarter round, it is also possible to use decorative moulding and a router bit that can shape the stock into the same pattern as that of the moulding. TOOLS

*Cut both ends at a 45 angle. ** Cut just one end at a 45 angle. Shape both ends of parts M and N with a router bit that produces the same curve as the quarter rounds. Shape the front of part M in the same way.

Sides
First you will need to assemble the two sides that support the shelves.

Lay legs H, I and J on the ground parallel to one another and nail in brackets O, P and Q, as illustrated, to assemble the right-hand side. Do the same in mirror fashion for the left-hand side.

Moulding
Moulding is glued to the underside of certain planks to complete the nished look achieved with the router.

Glue the short side mouldings B to the underside of the rounded ends of planks N.

Glue the long front moulding A to the underside of the rounded edge of front planks M, then glue the short right-hand-side and left-hand-side mouldings C and D under the ends of M. Leave the glue to dry.

Shelves
The shelves are supported by side brackets and are installed from the bottom tier up.

Nail the planks onto the bottom shelf brackets in the following order, working from front to back: one front plank M, two planks N of 31 3/8" and ve planks K of 28 3/8". The moulding under the front edge of plank M should t up against the ends of brackets P. All the planks on the bottom shelf should be spaced 1/2" apart.

Nail the planks onto the middle shelf brackets in the following order, working from front to back: one front plank M, two planks N of 31 3/8", two planks K of 28 3/8" and the back strip L. The moulding under the front edge of plank M should t up against the ends of brackets O. All the planks on the middle shelf should be spaced 1/2" apart.

Top shelf

Nail the planks onto the top shelf brackets in the following order, working from front to back: one front plank M and two planks N of 31 3/8". The moulding under the front edge of plank M should t up against the ends of brackets Q. The planks on the top shelf should be spaced 9/16" apart.

Braces
Cross braces are used to make the shelves completely sturdy.

Fasten braces E, F and G under the shelves, 8 1/4" from the sides. The front ends of the braces should t up against the front mouldings. Paint the shelves.
