This book allows for a wonderful shared reading
experience for children who are just beginning to learn to
read. The familiar rhyme and images help new readers “tell
the story” either as they read or as they are read to. What a
valuable tool for building the confidence new readers need to
embark on the adventures that await them while reading!
To extend this reading experience, do one or more of the
following:
1. Chant the rhyme together while reading the book.
2. Ask the child what he or she would do if there were a
lamb at school. Would he or she laugh and play like the
children in the rhyme?
3. Talk to the child about pets or animals. Have the child
draw himself or herself at school with his or her favorite
pet or animal.
4. Have the child pretend to be
Mary’s lamb. Encourage him
or her to imitate how a lamb
would sound and how it would
move.
5. After reading, let the child
come back to the book again
and again. Rereading is an
excellent tool for building
literacy skills.
