TIPS FOR PREPARING YOUR CV

Your resume should show not just your current employment, but rather the evolution of your professional career
and the impact of your work on those organizations. Please follow the below recommendations for writing your
resume.

 It must be only one page.

 It must contain the following sections:
o Personal Details: name, email address, telephone (with country code) and Linkedin (if it is updated).

o Education: you must put down any studies you have done that result in a title (undergraduate and
postgraduate courses). You can include any specialization courses that you have. If you graduated with
honors or if you achieved an excellent gross point average (4.0 out of 5.0, or higher), you should include
this information. Do not include short courses, diplomas or seminars.

o Professional Experience: start with your most recent position and work through to the oldest. You should
focus on your achievements, especially those that can be quantified. You should present your employment
history in bullet points, and you should start each with an action verb (for example, Developed model for
…). Show how you impacted the organization for the better (for instance, how your work helped the board
of directors make important strategic decisions).
With respect to action verbs, you should use the verb in the simple present or in its -ing form for your
current position. For past employment, you must use the verb in the simple past form.
If you have fewer than three years professional experience, put education first and then professional history.
However, if you have five years or more work experience, you should swap the order of the two sections;
that is, you should put your professional experience first and then your educational background.

o Other: in this section, put down (i) computer skills; this should only include any programming languages or
specialist software packages that you manage - do not include Microsoft Office or equivalent software, (ii)
languages spoken – remember to say that you speak Spanish. Include only those languages that you are
able to converse in.

o Hobbies and Interests: give the universities an insight into the things that move and impassion you; include
any volunteer work you have done, for example. This is a powerful tool on your resume; it starts
conversations and helps you stand out from the crowd.
o Profile: There is no consensus among universities. As a rule of thumb, US schools are not looking for a profile
in the CV. However, UK schools expect a factual profile. European and Canadian universities do not seem
to have a common rule.
