Exercise 05: Depth filtration

5.1 Determination of the required overstandig height

A fixed bed layer with a height of H = 1.5 m consists of particles with a diameter of d p = 0.6
mm, which form a porosity of ε = 0.4, should be flown by water (ρ = 1000 kg / m3, ν = 10-6
m² / s, fU = 2) at a velocity of vF = 15 m/h. What overstanding height is required, if the filtrate
should run out of the filter with an over-pressure of p2 = 1.0 mWS? If the porosity within the
filtration process decreases to ε = 0.3, to which value would the overstanding height change?
