Topic Proposal

The topic I am proposing is does film and TV have a responsibility to advocate and

promote progressivism? Examples of this would be should producers look to produce scripts

advocating progressive ideals or should they stay safe and not try and offend the public. Another

example would be should casting directors peruse more diverse lesser known casts or should

they stay with white actors who they know will be good. This stems from the ‘Whitewashing in

Hollywood’ debate and the ‘Oscars so white controversy.’ This is still considered an issue as the

famous white actor Matt Damon is acting in the new movie The Great Wall which is about a

monster invasion at the Great Wall of China. I would take the stance on progressivism.

Hollywood reflects the culture of America. If Hollywood choose to pick progressive scripts and

diverse casts it would show that America is not backwards and is movie forward. A choice they

could do is instead of having the Middle East character be a terrorist, let them be a doctor. Even

if Hollywood created small differences it could have the possibility of creating large scale culture

shift in America for the better.
