THE ARTISTIC ANGLE
I first met Lynn Nottage 30 years ago. She was working for Amnesty International and had
written a monologue for a play I was producing at Second Stage in our 100 seat Uptown
theater, A...My Name is Still Alice. The monologue was about a woman at a bus stop.

Sounds ordinary, but the writing was anything but. It was smart, funny and had that sparky
language that I look for in a writer. So I commissioned her to write a work which became her
first play, Crumbs from the Table of Joy.

I may have opened a door for Lynn, but her great success as a writer, and two time Pulitzer
Prize winner, is entirely her own. And now I have the privilege of producing her newest play,
Clyde’s, on Broadway for a much wider audience.

The group of incredibly talented artists who are part of this production, from Lynn’s long
time collaborator Kate Whoriskey to a first time member like Takeshi Kata, have come
together after 18 months of silence to start a conversation with the audience.

It is with great joy that we re-open the Hayes, that we contribute to the process of healing,
that we continue to be a Broadway theater exclusively dedicated to the voices of living
American writers.

WELCOME TO SECOND STAGE!
Welcome back to Broadway, and welcome to Clyde’s by Lynn Nottage, a new play about second chances and last
resorts. One of the many gifts of great art is the way it can move us to real life action. The characters in Clyde’s and
their stories have inspired us to take action around the issues of second chance hiring, reentry, and how the arts are
a way to express, heal, and grow.
This season, we are addressing the need to create a more diverse pipeline of arts workers and audiences. We will
connect underrepresented communities with our work through a variety of audience engagement programming.
Further, we will offer targeted theater apprenticeships and be a conduit to employment assistance between
Returning Citizens (people formerly incarcerated) and the Broadway theater industry and its affiliates.
We have planned a series of thought-provoking post-show panel discussions. These conversations will feature
professionals working in the social justice field, criminal justice system reform advocates, and people with lived
experience of incarceration and the criminal justice system. We have connected with incredible partners to bring
you the following schedule of talkbacks: Prison Creative Arts Project on November 11, Rehabilitation Through the
Arts on November 18, Fortune Society on December 2, Art for Justice Fund on December 9, Ameelio on December
15, Youth Justice Network on December 16, Project Renewal on December 21, League of Women Voters and Hour
Children on January 6, and Lehman College’s Reentry@Lehman on January 13.
Please explore our virtual art exhibit organized by the Prison Creative Arts Project. PCAP exhibits bring the work of
incarcerated artists into the public realm to humanize prisoners, break stereotypes, and create dialogue about mass
incarceration. (2ST.com/clydes).
Thanks to the generous support of Art for Justice Fund, we are excited to announce our pilot apprenticeship program
for Returning Citizens in partnership with the Youth Justice Network. These apprenticeships provide hands-on job
training with a focus on general management, production management, and front of house operations.
Another exciting initiative is our job fair. Theatergoers appreciate the connection among restaurants, bars, hotels,
and attending theater; the job fair provides an opportunity to connect people who are looking for work with
these vital industries that support our greater community. All our partners commit to an open hiring policy that
encourages employing Returning Citizens.
You can learn more about these programs and additional ways you can support Returning Citizens by visiting
2ST.com/clydes.
Thank you for joining us for Clyde’s, enjoy the show.

2NDSTAGE MOVING FORWARD CAMPAIGN
Second Stage Theater launched a $75 million capital campaign to purchase and renovate the Hayes theater on
44th Street. This is our first permanent home, and is the only Broadway stage dedicated exclusively to works
by living American playwrights. Our campaign includes the New American Voices Fund, designed to facilitate
our organizational growth, allow us to continue taking artistic risks, and support the play development,
audience outreach and education initiatives needed to fill our stages.

Consider joining the MOVING FORWARD campaign by visiting 2STonBroadway.com or call 212-787-8302 x141.

Pop Writers That Brought Original
Musical Scores to the Stage
We’re taking a look at artists who traded in the recording studio for the Broadway stage

one are the days when radio artists looked to Broadway for the next chart-topping hit song,
but sometimes pop writers still go in the opposite direction, writing original scores for stage
musicals. Though we all love jukebox musicals like Beautiful and Tina that use an artist’s
song catalog to tell an original story or the biography of the artist themselves, we’re taking a look
at 5 times popular musicians wrote completely original scores as dramatic works for the stage.
