2. The fifth-largest city in Bulgaria is Ruse. It lies along the Danube in the northeastern part
of Bulgaria. Ruse is Bulgaria's most important river port, facilitating the nation's
international trade.
3. One of the best-known features of Ruse is its architecture and well-preserved buildings.
Ruse has beautiful nineteenth- and twentieth-century Neo-Baroque architecture, which
has earned the city a place among the Hundred Tourist Sites of Bulgaria. It is also known
for its many monuments, numbering more than two hundred and sixty.
5. People first settled Ruse during the Neolithic period, from the third to second millennium
BC. Fishing, hunting, and agriculture developed there during that time. Sanctuaries were
discovered nearby with many idols of pregnant women believed to represent a fertility
goddess. This settlement would evolve into a Roman military center. Ruse later came
under control of the Ottoman Empire, from which it was liberated in 1878.
6. The Verachim factory was built in the 1980s. Over the next few years it polluted the city
and caused a major decrease in population. The pollution cleared in 1987, but an

2000.
