EXAMINER REMARKS

List A
Prelude and Fugue in B flat Major, BWV 866 - J. S. Bach: Prelude – Clear passagework, and the pulse is well maintained.
Consider taking still more time in the improvisatory sections on the second page, and give greater attention to the
harmonic tension and release to bring further depth to the performance. Fugue – A well chosen tempo for this fugue;
subject entries are clear and the performance retains a settled quality throughout. Continue to bring further attention to
cadence points; consider slightly more length on the downbeat eighth note at times (m. 27, 28 and 29, for example), to
feel a greater sense of arrival. Bring greater variety to the phrase plan. Still, commendable work here – this holds together
with success.

List B
Rondo in D Major, K 485 - W. A. Mozart: A very good sense of style presented with attention to tonal warmth in the singing
line over a more subtle accompaniment. Rhythmic accentuations generally well placed, though can be more finely wrought
at times (for example, 2nd 8th-note of the beat can be slightly lighter at m. 17 and 19, RH). Check m. 86 – maintain

Page 1/2
momentum. Be sure all rests are observed with care; at times the RH quarter holds too long into the following beat’s rest.
While these may be small points, work to heighten the sophistication of the playing still more. Good sense of dramatic
character between thematic material. Explore more fully the contrast in tonal coloration possible in more chromatic areas
of this Rondo. Overall, very well presented with the Classical elegance mostly well maintained throughout.

List C
Wedding Day at Troldhaugen, Op. 65, no. 6 - E. Grieg: A fine sense of celebratory quality in the outer sections, with a
good sense of rhythmic momentum. In the larger parts, consider a more gradual build up to bring a greater sense of
suspense and arrival to the peak of phrases. Bring more warmth and introspection to the melody at the Poco tranquillo
section; a more plaintive quality, to bring further contrast to the jubilation of the outer wedding scene sections. The larger
texture is generally well handled, though gets somewhat bombastic at times. This still holds together very well, and
delivered with a very fine sense of freedom and confidence.

List D
La plus que lente - C. Debussy: The performance is very well paced, with a good variety of levels and direction in the
phrasing. Strive for a still greater warmth in the forte playing to keep the sound ideal more in context of this work. Pedaling
is well managed. Again, a fine sense of maturity emerges here, with a sensitive delivery. Excellent work!

List E
Prelude in C Major, op. 12, no. 7 - Sergei Prokofiev: Very good attention to the phrasing of the LH melodic line in the busy
harp-like texture. Passagework is well managed with a good sense of momentum. Check m. 27 as the E on beat 2 was an
octave too high. In m. 55 strive for a softer, more ethereal entry of the main theme. This mostly holds together very well; a
slip early on, but professionally handled.

Technical Tests
Generally very well prepared. Check notes in f# harmonic minor scale. Four-note chords confidently delivered. Arpeggios
well done – good legato touch, tonal support and fluency. Well presented.

Etude 1
Sérénade, Op. 53, no. 5 - Ernst Haberbier: Excellent concept here, with a well projected melodic line and more subtle
accompaniment. Check notes at m. 22 and at m. 41. Mostly secure, with excellent flexibility and line shaping.

Etude 2
Étude-tableau, Op. 33, no. 8 - Sergei Rachmaninoff: Again, very well prepared and the texture is well managed
throughout. Excellent pacing on p. 28. Nuance in the line can be more finely tailored at times, but this is a convincing
performance – well done!

Congratulations on a successful exam! A wonderful technical facility, and sense of personality emerges with much
success in the playing. Keep up the fine work, and all the best as you progress forward into the ARCT Level!
