PART 2 HUMORAL AND CELL MEDAITED IMMUNITY

1. Explain what is Humoral Immunity and Cell-mediated immunity

Humoral immunity is also called antibody-mediated immunity. With assistance from helper T
cells, B cells will differentiate into plasma B cells that can produce antibodies against a specific
antigen. The humoral immune system deals with antigens from pathogens that are freely
circulating, or outside the infected cells. Cell-mediated immunity (CMI) is an immune response
that does not involve antibodies but rather involves the activation of macrophages and NK-
cells, the production of antigen-specific cytotoxic T-lymphocytes, and the release of various
cytokines in response to an antigen .

2. In a tabular form differentiate humoral immunity and cell mediated immunity

HUMORAL IMMUNITY CELL MEDIATED IMMUNITY

• Immune response mediated by antibody • Immune response mediated by cells

• Protects against extracellular bacterial • Protects against fungi, viruses, and
pathogens and viruses infecting facultative intracellular bacterial
respiratory or intestinal tracts; and pathogens
prevents recurrence of viral infections
• Mediates immediate (type I, II, and III) • Mediates delayed (type IV)
hypersensitivity hypersensitivity
• B cells directly bind soluble antigens • Only T-cell-dependent antigens lead to
resulting in production of antibodies cell-mediated immunity
• Only TH cells are involved • Both CD4+ and CD8+ T cells are involved
• No major role in immunological • Provides immunological surveillance and
surveillance immunity against cancer
• May be involved in early graft rejection • Participates in rejection of homo-grafts
due to performed antibodies and graft-versus-host reaction

3. Give similarities of the these two type of immunity

The similarities between cell-mediated and humoral immunity:

• Both humoral and cell-mediated immunity are active immunities.

• Both have a lag period.
• Both are active against a wide variety of pathogens.
• Both possess immunological memories.
• Both the systems are not effective in immune-deficient individuals.
