NEW CITY

presbyterian church

AUGUST 21, 2022

WELCOME TO NEW CITY PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH

New City is a collection of people of all ages and professions, from a wide variety of spiritual
and social backgrounds. We embrace Jesus’ claims to be true and transformational. We
also believe the central message of the Bible is the good news, or “gospel,” of a God who
created us for Himself and desires us to live fully as we enjoy relationship with Him and
with each other.

The Bible’s radical message of grace centers on Jesus and creates a new city comprised
of renewed individuals living not for themselves but for the God who redeems. For this
reason, New City exists to be a community rooted in truth, real in conversation, and hopeful
for deep renewal in our lives and our city.

It is our privilege to welcome you and to invite you to be astonished, together with us, by
the splendor and grace of God.

NEW CITY VISION & VALUES

To be a church in awe of God,

made new by the gospel, for the sake of all people.

Our vision leads us to hold closely three values that shape our life and ministry as a church:

ROOTED CONVICTION in the truths of God’s Word

REAL CONVERSATION as we engage the gospel, culture, and each other
RENEWAL OF THE CITY as we live and do life in relationship with God

1
CALL TO WORSHIP Ephesians 5:13-14
God always comes to
us before we can come 13
When anything is exposed by the light, it becomes visible, 14
for anything that becomes
to Him. Biblical worship
is a response to God’s visible is light. Therefore it says,
gracious revelation of
Himself, calling us to “Awake, O sleeper,
worship.
and arise from the dead,
and Christ will shine on you.”

ALL GATHERING HYMN 10,000 Reasons (Bless The Lord)

Jonas Myrin, Matt Redman.

CCLI #6016351
Bless the Lord O my soul, O my soul You’re rich in love and You’re slow to anger
Worship His holy name Your name is great, and Your heart is kind
Sing like never before, O my soul For all your goodness I will keep on singing
I’ll worship Your holy name Ten thousand reasons for my heart to find

The sun comes up it’s a new day dawning And on that day when my strength is failing
It’s time to sing Your song again The end draws near, and my time has come
Whatever may pass and whatever lies before me Still my soul will sing Your praise unending
Let me be singing when the evening comes Ten thousand years and then forevermore

READING FROM THE EPISTLES From 1 Peter 4:12-19

True worship is biblical
worship. Throughout Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial when it comes upon you to test you, but
our worship service, we
read, pray, and sing the rejoice insofar as you share Christ’s sufferings, [...] let those who suffer according to God’s
words of Scripture. will entrust their souls to a faithful Creator while doing good.

The Prayer of Invocation

is a humble yet earnest PRAYER OF INVOCATION
calling upon God to
reveal Himself and
bless us as we gather
to worship.

ALL HYMN OF FAITH When Trials Come
Keith and Kristyn Getty.
© 2005 Thankyou Music.
CCLI #4619523
When trials come no longer fear, for in the pain our God draws near
To fire a faith worth more than gold, and there His faithfulness is told
And there His faithfulness is told

Within the night I know Your peace the breath of God brings strength to me
And new each morning mercy flows, as treasures of the darkness grow
As treasures of the darkness grow

I turn to Wisdom not my own, for every battle You have known
My confidence will rest in You, your love endures Your ways are good
Your love endures Your ways are good

When I am weary with the cost I see the triumph of the cross
So in its shadow I shall run, till He completes the work begun
Till He completes the work begun

One day all things will be made new, I’ll see the hope You called me to
And in your kingdom paved with gold, I’ll praise your faithfulness of old
I’ll praise your faithfulness of old

11
Because of all my adversaries I have become a reproach,
especially to my neighbors,
and an object of dread to my acquaintances;
those who see me in the street flee from me.
12
I have been forgotten like one who is dead;
I have become like a broken vessel.
13
For I hear the whispering of many—terror on every side!—
as they scheme together against me,
as they plot to take my life.
14
But I trust in you, O LORD;
I say, “You are my God.”
15
My times are in your hand;
rescue me from the hand of my enemies and from my persecutors!
16
Make your face shine on your servant;
save me in your steadfast love!
17
O LORD, let me not be put to shame, for I call upon you;
let the wicked be put to shame; let them go silently to Sheol.
18
Let the lying lips be mute,
which speak insolently against the righteous in pride and contempt.
19
Oh, how abundant is your goodness,
which you have stored up for those who fear you
and worked for those who take refuge in you, in the sight of the children of mankind!
20
In the cover of your presence you hide them from the plots of men;
you store them in your shelter from the strife of tongues.
21
Blessed be the LORD,
for he has wondrously shown his steadfast love to me when I was in a besieged city.

I had said in my alarm,
“I am cut off from your sight.”
But you heard the voice of my pleas for mercy when I cried to you for help.

Love the LORD, all you his saints!
The LORD preserves the faithful but abundantly repays the one who acts in pride.
24
Be strong, and let your heart take courage, all you who wait for the LORD!

ALL HYMN AT THE TABLE Arise My Soul, Arise (O My Soul, Arise)
Charles Wesley, alt. Eric McAllister.
1742, Public Domain
CCLI #6271646
Arise, my soul, arise, shake off your guilty fears
The bleeding sacrifice on my behalf appears
Before the throne my surety stands, before the throne my surety stands
My name is written on His hands

He ever lives above for me to intercede

His all-redeeming love, His precious blood to plead
His blood atoned for every race, His blood atoned for every race
And sprinkles now the throne of grace

O my soul, arise, behold the risen Christ

Your Great High Priest, Your spotless sacrifice
O my soul, arise, God owns you as His child
Shake off your guilty fears, my soul, arise

Five bleeding wounds He bears, received on Calvary

They pour effectual prayers, they strongly plead for me:
“Forgive him, O forgive,” they cry, “Forgive him, O forgive,” they cry
“Don’t let that ransomed sinner die!”

My God is reconciled, His pardoning voice I hear

He owns me as His child; I can no longer fear
With confidence I now draw nigh, with confidence I now draw nigh
And “Father, Abba, Father,” cry

We will not be burned by the fire
He is the Lord our God
We are not consumed by the flood
Upheld protected gathered up

We will feast in the house of Zion

We will sing with our hearts restored
He has done great things we will say together
We will feast and weep no more

In the dark of night before the dawn

My soul be not afraid
For the promised morning oh how long
Oh God of Jacob be my strength

Every vow we’ve broken and betrayed

You are the faithful one
And from the garden to the grave
Bind us together bring shalom

Our gathered worship

service concludes with
BENEDICTION
God’s blessing; a joyful
declaration of God’s
satisfaction in us through
Jesus Christ, and a vow
to be in fellowship with
us as we scatter.

WORSHIPPING WITH LITTLE ONES
What a joy and privilege to worship with children! Worship is a communal activity in which we
participate together as a church family and is one of the best ways to welcome children into the life
of the church. Yet, children are in the process of learning the significance of worship and how to
worship. During times in which we offer Nursery and Kids Bible Time, teachers emphasize why we
worship and help children learn prayers and songs that are typically part of our services. However,
during our season of Worship On The Lawn, there are ways parents and congregants alike can aid
our children in the joys of worship.

FOR PARENTS:
Parents have the responsibility and blessing to lead and train children in worship. Consider the tips
below to help you in this process:
• Start Saturday night by looking at the worship bulletin (newcitypc.org/live) and practicing songs that will
be sung. Prepare a backpack or one of our New City Kids’ totes with a notebook, markers, play-doh, and
other tools that can help your child engage the worship service.

• Children–and adults!–can concentrate and hear better if they sit up front. Consider using a pic-nic
blanket if they need some space to move around.

• Worship with rather than beside children. Help your child who can’t read by singing the words of the
chorus in their ears so they can sing along.

• Help them follow along in the Bible. Point out words for young or non-readers that are repetitive.

• Allow children to participate in offering by sharing their allowance.

• Whisper instructions or comments such as, “Now is the time when we tell God how great He is.”

FOR THE REST OF US:

Church is not for adults only. Supporting the children of New City as they grow as worshippers of
the Lord is the responsibility of us all.
• Remember the commitment you made as a church when children were baptized, a commitment to
encourage them to become disciples of Christ.

• Introduce yourself to the child sitting beside you. Make him or her feel welcomed and important.

• Have patience with the learning process and pray for families.

• Compliment children who are listening attentively during the service.

• Consider providing encouragement and support for single mothers or children with special needs.

• As we worship, look around. Can we make the experience easier for the families learning how to worship?

Teaching children how to worship the Lord with reverence and awe is something we can all be
excited about doing. What a blessing and privilege is this special endeavor!
