1 INTRODUCTION

1.1 Description
The 2-Tube option allows interfacing a second X-ray tube to the EPS 45-80 High-Voltage
Generator. It contains a standalone tube switch assembly and the necessary hardware to operate the
two X-ray tubes in any RAD workstation.

If the EPS 45-80 High-Voltage Generator is fitted with the Epsilon Operator Console, this latter
will control the selection and the display of both X-ray tubes parameters. Fluoro is not allowed on
the second X-ray tube. RAD exposures cannot be done on both X-ray tubes simultaneously.

2 INSTALLATION

All parts of the option are shipped in a single heavy-duty cardboard box. Open the box and inspect
the parts (Figure 2) for any mechanical damage that could impair the operation of the system.

2.1 2-Tube Option Interface Board Installation

The 2-Tube Option Interface Board P/N 9996.00 must be installed in one of the four positions
available on the Expansion Motherboard (J4 through J1 connectors, Figure 3). Use the first free
position available beginning from J4 (right-most) connector.
In Figure 3, for example, the board should be installed on J2-position of Expansion Motherboard.

Figure 3 – Connect the 2-Tube Option Interface Board P/N 9996.00 on the first available
free connector on the Expansion Motherboard, beginning from the right-most position (J4).

Note that the position of the boards connected to the Expansion Motherboard must be specified in
the generator configuration. Refer to Section 3.1.

If the 2-Tube Option Interface Board P/N 9996.00 has to be installed in

J1 position (left-most connector), the side panel of the board must be
taken off before connecting it to the Expansion Motherboard. To do so,
loosen the two nuts of the 2-Tube Option Interface Board (Figure 4) and
pull out the side panel.

Figure 4 – Side panel removal of the 2-Tube Option Interface board.

Do this step only when this board is the fourth one to be installed on
the Expansion Motherboard. ¾

2.2 High-Voltage Cables Connection

1. Place the Two-Tube Assembly at less than six feet of the EPS 45-80 H.-V. Generator.

CAUTION– RISK OF ELECTRIC SHOCK

2. Make sure the mains line is turned off at the room circuit breaker.

3. Label one high-voltage cable supplied with the option as "Anode" and the other one as
"Cathode".

4. Take off the protective covers of the high-voltage output on both receptacles of the generator.
Do not discard them as they can be used later for shipping.

2-Tube Option EPS 45-80 High-Voltage Generator

5. Ensure proper isolation of the receptacles by coating them with insulating grease. Isolation is
necessary to prevent electric arcs between the high-voltage receptacles and the tube switch
assembly.

6. Connect the anode high-voltage cable (6-foot) between the generator’s anode receptacle
and the anode high-voltage receptacle on the tube switch assembly (identified “A”). Make
sure the contact pins are engaged in the holes of the receptacles. Tighten the cable nut
while holding the cable firmly in place. Use an appropriate Allen ranch to tighten the
cable ring nut. If necessary, consult the installation instructions provided by the H.V.
cable manufacturer
Repeat last step to install the cathode high-voltage cable (6-foot) on the generator’s
cathode H.V. receptacle and the cathode H.V. receptacle (identified “K”) on the 2-tube
option assembly.

7. Repeat steps 5 and 6 to connect the high-voltage cables (not supplied with the
option) between the high-voltage receptacles “A1” and “K1” on the tube switch
assembly and the X-ray tube number 1 (figure 5).

• Use the same type and the same length of High-Voltage cables for both
anode and cathode sides.

• To make this connection, follow the installation procedures provided by the X-

ray tube manufacturer. Make sure to respect the maximum cable length between
the tube switch assembly and each X-ray tube.

8. Repeat step 7 to connect the high-voltage cables (not supplied with the option)
between the high-voltage receptacles “A2” and “K2” on the tube switch assembly
and the X-ray tube number 2 (figure 5).

Make sure that both cathode and anode high-voltage cables are installed between
the generator and the X-ray tube before making any exposures (4 cables).

2.3 Low-Voltage Interconnection

1. Connect the 2-Tube Option assembly ground cable (attached to the
ground of the 2-Tube Option Assembly) to the screw on the generator
chassis shown in Figure 5.

2. Install the network cable between the Tube Switch Interface Board
and RJ45 connector on the tube switch assembly (Figure 5).

Maximum length of Federal Cables: Cable lengths shown not to scale

“K” = “A” = 6 foot (cables supplied with 2-Tube Option)
“a1” = “k1” < Max. 94 foot and “a2” = “k2” < Max. 94 foot (cables supplied by customer)

3.2 Tube Setup

Refer to Section 4.4 of your Technical Manual and to Epsilon PC Tools to setup both X-ray
tubes using the proper tube chart file of the Tube Package library. Usually, the tube library is
provided with your generator on a CD.

3.3 Tube Assignment

Refer to Section 4.5 of your Technical Manual and to Epsilon PC Tools to assign the proper X-
ray tube to every workstation.

4 TUBE CALIBRATION
Refer to Chapter 5 of your Technical Manual to perform the tube calibration on both X-ray tubes.

5 DISPOSAL OF THE PRODUCT

At the end of the 2-Tube Option Box Assembly usable life, proper environmental considerations
shall be taken to dispose of its dielectric oil (15 liters) according to local laws.
