ABSTRACT

This research titled The Use of Topic Conversation Method in Podcast Media to
Increase Students’ Speaking Ability aims to determine the increasement of
students’ speaking ability by using topic conversation method in podcast as the
teaching media on extracurricular programs of SMK YASPIM Gegerbitung –
Sukabumi. This research focus on the students’ topic development that raised
based on the theory of Hamzah (2013) and the transaction structure in
conversation and topic by Hudiyono, Y. (2021). The writer used Pre-experimental
method with one pretest-posttest design group, and collected data by providing
pre-test and post-test. The sample of this research is the English language
extracurricular members of SMK YASPIM Gegerbitung – Sukabumi consisting
13 students. The result of the data analysis showed that the means score of post-
test was higher than the mean score of pre-test (76,54 > 58,85), minimum
students’ score of post-test was higher than pre-test (50 > 35), maximum students’
score of post-test also higher than pre-test (90 > 85). The data also normally
distribute with the Shapiro-Wilk value (0.066). The t-test showed that the students
have sufficient enough of score in pre-test and after the treatment of students’
speaking ability increase significantly. The result of data analysis showed that the
significance (two-sided p) of pre-test and post-test value was lower than T value
(0.01 <0.05), this indicated that alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted and (Ho)
null hypothesis was rejected. It means that there was significantly different of the
student achievement before and after giving treatment by topic conversation
method in podcast media.

ABSTAK

Penelitian dengan judul “The Use of Topic Conversation Method in Podcast


Media to Increase Students’ Speaking Ability” bertujuan untuk menentukan
perkembangan kemampuan berbicara siswa dengan menggunakan metode topic
conversation yang diimplementasikan dalam posdcast sebagai media
pembelajaran dalam program ekstrakurikuler SMK YASPIM Gegerbitung-
Sukabumi. Penelitian ini berfokus pada perkembangan topik pada percakapan
siswa yang muncul berdasarkan teori dari Hamzah (2013) dan transaction
structure in conversation oleh Hudoyono, Y (2021). Penulis menggunakan
metode Pre-experimental dengan one pretest-posttest design group. Dan
mengumpulkan data dengan menyediakan pre-test dan post-test. Sampel pada
penelitian ini adalah anggotan extrakurikuler bahasa Inggris SMK YASPIM
Gegerbitung – Sukabumi yaitu 13 siswa. Hasil analisis data pada penelitian ini
menunjukan bahwa nilai mean pada post-test lebih tinggi daripada nilai mean
pada pre-test (76,54 > 85,85), nilai terrendah siswa pada post-test lebih tinggi
daripada pre-test (50 > 35), nilai tertinggi siswa pada post-test juga lebih tinggi
daripada pretest (90 > 85). data yang diperoleh pada penelitian ini juga dinyatakan
terdistribusi normal dengan nilai Shapiro-Wilk (0.066). nilai t-test menunjukan
bahwa siswa memiliki nilai yang cukup baik pada pre-test dan setelah diberikan
perlakuan kemampuan berbicara siswa meningkat secara signifikan. Hasil analisis
data menunjukan bahwa nilai signifikasi (two-sided p) dari pre-test dan post-test
lebih rendah dari nilai T value (0.01 <0.05). hal ini mengindikasikan bahwa (Ha)
alternative hupothesis diterima dan (Ho) null hypothesis ditolak. Yang artinya,
bahwa terdapat perbedaan yang signifikan dari pencapaian siswa sebelum dan
sesudah diberikan perlakuan terkait kemampuan speaking siswa dengan
menggunakan metode topic conversation pada media pembelajaran podcast.

Gracious God of Allah SWT who has given the opportunity so the writer can
finish the paper as partial fulfillment of the requirement for Undergraduate Degree
of English Education Program with the title “The Use of Topic Conversation
Method in Podcast Media to Increase Students’ Speaking Ability (Experiment
Study on Extracurricular Programs of SMK YASPIM Gegerbitung-Sukabumi).

The writer realizes that the writing of this thesis is still far from perfection
due to the limited ability and knowledge that the writer has, the writer sincerely
