This module helps you get familiarize and be guided to a deeper understanding on the Principles of
counseling

OBJECTIVES:

The learners shall be able to demonstrate a high level of the basic concepts of counseling through
a presentation of a situation in which practitioners of counseling work together to assist
individuals, groups, or communities involved in difficult situations (e.g., post disaster, court
hearing about separation of celebrity couple, cyber bullying.

Specifically,, as a learner, you are expected to explain the principles of counseling.

What is Principle?
A principle is a proposition or value that is a guide for behavior or evaluation. In law, it is
a rule that has to be or usually is to be followed, or can be desirably followed, or is an
inevitable consequence of something, such as the laws observed in nature or the way that
a system is constructed (Wikepedia)

It serves as the foundation for a system of belief or behavior or for a chain of reasoning.

It is morally correct behavior and attitudes.

In counseling, its practitioners are guided by the Basic Principles of Counseling that serve as their referenc

Basic Principles of Counseling
Principles of Learning – the presence of the learning elements in the entire process are accepted and recognize
Principles of Acceptance – the counselors show positive regards and accepts the client irrespective of who she/

In the helping process, the counselor’s values and attitudes play a critical role.
The way counselors see themselves, their clients, the helping process, and the world
around them will affect the way in which they counsel.

Counselors should enter the helping process with a sincere respect for their clients, an open and
genuine attitude, and intention of helping their clients to empower themselves and take
responsibility for their own lives.

Counselor? Why this principle? What aspect of the principle influences you?
