In this manual, the following important symbols and notations are used.

 A Warning indicates a potentially hazardous situation. Failure to obey a Warning could result in
death or serious injury.

 A Caution indicates a potentially hazardous situation. Failure to obey a Caution could result in
minor or moderate injury or damage to the machine or other property.

 Obey these guidelines to avoid problems such as misfeeds, damage to originals, loss of
valuable data and to prevent damage to the machine.

 This information provides tips and advice about how to best service the machine.
Safety

Prevention of Physical Injury

1. Before disassembling or assembling parts of the machine and peripherals, make sure that the
machine and peripheral power cords are unplugged.
2. The plug should be near the machine and easily accessible.
3. Note that some components of the machine and the paper tray unit are supplied with electrical
voltage even if the main power switch is turned off.
4. Always unplug the power cord from the power source before you move the product. Before you
move the machine, arrange the power cord so it will not fall under the machine.
5. If any adjustment or operation check has to be made with exterior covers off or open while the main
switch is turned on, keep hands away from electrified or mechanically driven components.
6. The machine drives some of its components when it completes the warm-up period. Be careful to
keep hands away from the mechanical and electrical components as the machine starts operation.
7. The inside and the metal parts of the fusing unit become extremely hot while the machine is
operating. Be careful to avoid touching those components with your bare hands.
8. To prevent a fire or explosion, keep the machine away from flammable liquids, gases, and
aerosols.
9. Do not use flammable sprays or solvent in the vicinity of the machine. Also, avoid placing these
items in the vicinity of the machine. Doing so could result in fire or electric shock.
10. To avoid fire or explosion, never use an organic cleaner near any part that generates heat.
11. Clean the floor completely after accidental spillage of silicone oil or other materials to prevent
slippery surfaces that could cause accidents leading to hand or leg injuries.
12. Never remove any safety device unless it requires replacement. Always replace safety devices
immediately.
13. Never do any procedure that defeats the function of any safety device.
14. Modification or removal of a safety device (fuse, switch, etc.) could lead to a fire and personal
injury. Always test the operation of the machine to ensure that it is operating normally and safely
after removal and replacement of any safety device.
15. For replacements use only the correct fuses or circuit breakers rated for use with the machine.
Using replacement devices not designed for use with the machine could lead to a fire and personal
injuries.
16. When using a vacuum cleaner around the machine, keep others away from the cleaner, especially
small children.
17. For machines installed with the anti-tip components:
The anti-tip components are necessary for meeting the requirements of IEC60950-1, the
international standard for safety. The aim of these components is to prevent the products, which
are heavy in weight, from toppling as a result of people running into or leaning onto the products,
which can lead to serious accidents such as persons becoming trapped under the product. (U.S.:
UL60950-1, Europe: EN60950-1) Therefore, removal of such components must always be with the
consent of the customer. Do not remove them at your own judgment.
18. NEVER touch the AC circuits on the PSU board to prevent electric shock caused by residual
charge. Residual charge of about 100V-400V remains in the AC circuits on the PSU board for
several months even when the board has been removed from the machine after turning off the
machine power and unplugging the power cord.

Notes on the Power Button

Characteristics of the Power Button

Power is supplied to the machine even when the power is turned OFF with the power
button.

The power button in this machine uses DC (direct current). Therefore, if the AC power cord is
connected to an AC wall outlet, power is supplied to the main board, the operation unit and other
modules even when the power is turned OFF. When replacing the controller board and the operation
unit in this state, not only these boards, it will damage other electrical components.
So, when performing maintenance work such as replacing parts, in addition to turning off the power with
the power button, always unplug the AC power cord.

When you disconnect the power cord from the AC wall outlet, inside the machine there is
still residual charge.

When you disconnect the power cord from the AC wall outlet, inside the machine for a while there is still
residual charge. Therefore, if you remove boards in this state, it can cause a blown fuse or memory
failure.

How to Turn off the Main Power

Press the power button at the lower right of the main unit.
After the power is turned off, unplug the power cord.

To start from shutdown

Connect the power cord, and then press the power button.

Checking the Touch Sensor

Setting the Dashboard Software

When there is a touch sensor error, it could be caused by the touch sensor or the display unit.
“Dashboard Software” is required for distinguishing problems with the touch sensor. Set it up on the
computer in advance, following the procedure below.
Basically, misalignment does not occur on the touch sensor, but it should be tested with this software
before you decide to replace the display unit.
If the optional controller is installed, the touch sensor can be checked in service mode instead of this
software.

Preparations

1. Dashboard software
Obtain from the firmware download site for CE
2. Computer
Windows 7, Windows 8 or Windows 10.
3. USB cable for touch module (included)

Setting up and Starting Procedure

 Before starting the Dashboard software, be sure to close all other applications running on the
computer.
1. Connect the computer and main unit with a USB cable and a VGA cable.
2. Download and unzip the Dashboard software.

Misalignment of the point where the pen or finger touches the screen and the point detected by the
sensor can be checked with the drawing function of the Dashboard software.
1. Start the Dashboard software.
2. Click the full-screen icon on the upper right of the screen.

 Drawing on the screen other than in the full-screen mode may cause misalignment of the
touch pen or finger and the place where the drawing appears, and the detection position
cannot be checked.
3. Draw with a touch pen supplied with the display or a finger, and check that the point of the pen or

77
4.System Maintenance

finger aligns with the location on the screen where the drawing appears.

Checking the Graph

There are six sensors on the upper part of the bezel. The detection status of each sensor can be
checked with the Dashboard software, and the results are displayed as a graph.
1. Start the Dashboard software.
2. Draw with a touch pen supplied with the display or a finger.

 A graph is not displayed if nothing is drawn on the display.

3. Click the graph icon at the upper right on the display.

4. Select one of the six sensors with the select buttons [C]. The sensor is normal if the gray line [A] is

Overview
Position Detection by the Touch Sensor

Outline of the Touch Sensor

The frame-type Shadow Sense touch sensor [B], made by Baanto, is mounted on the frame of the LCD
[A], and the decorative bezel is mounted on the module.

Principle of the Touch Sensor

 The light emitters [A], the same as with the D6500/D8400, are along the left, right and bottom sides
of the bezel.
 At the upper inside of the bezel, there are six photo-detector modules [B].
 Each photo-detector module contains a pair of photo-detection elements [C] to detect the
brightness, and a screen [D].
 The ratio of light-receiving intensity on the two photo-detection elements changes depending on
the light-source position and the presence or absence of a shield, such as a pen. The shielded
position is detected from the change in ratio.

89
6.Detailed Descriptions

Features

 Detection of the ratio of light-receiving intensity on the photo-detection elements is analog. This
enables the system to detect fine changes in the position of a pen, enabling the user to write in
small letters.
 Baanto named this system Shadow Sense because the relation of the photo-detection elements
and screen is similar to the principle of a sundial [A].
