Exercise-10: Overlay Operation and Neighborhood Analysis

The neighborhood analysis is the buffering of some objects and analysis on them. You can create a
buffer around selected points, lines, or area features by using the Buffer command. Buffered
features are stored in the target layer, which must contain either line or polygon features.
Prepare for exercise
• Open ArcMap
• Add data layers (Buildings_Point, Buildings_Polygon and Road_Centerline in your Arc Map
D\Training_Data\Ex_10_NeighborhoodAnalysis)

How to create buffers from Point data

a. Click one of the features in Buildings_Point layer with Selection tool.
b. Expand Proximity tool under analysis tool in ArcToolbox and double click Buffer.
c. Select Building point as an input feature and save output feature class as Building_Buffer in
your directory.
d. Input 50 meter as distance value and click ok.

Buffering ring
with radius
equals 50m

Task: Find the Number of Buildings points within the buffer area of 50m radius circle.

How to create buffers from Line data
a. In road centerline layer, select Ringroad by using select by attribute query.
b. Expand Proximity tool under analysis tool in ArcToolbox and double click Buffer.
c. Select Road_Centreline as an input feature and save output feature class as Ringroad_Buffer
in your directory.
d. Input 100 meter as distance value and click ok.

Task: Find the Number of Buildings points within the buffer area of 100m from road centerline.
Similarly you can create the buffer from polygon shapefile.
