Exercise-8: Spatial Query / Spatial Selection

We need to find the features based on their geographic or spatial relationship to the other
features. Instead of using the cursor of geometric shapes to select features we use features from
one layer to select the features in another layer is called spatial query. When selecting features
with spatial queries, we use the Select By Location dialog available from ArcMap’s Selection Menu.

Prepare for exercise


1. Open Arc Map
2. Add Data layers (Buildings, Road Centerline, River polygon and LandUse in your Arc Map
(D:\GIS_TRN_CPC\Training_Data\Ex08_Spatial_Query)

Task1: Select all buildings which are at a distance of 20meter from river edge

1. Go to Selection menu and click select by


location
2. Choose select from feature from drop-down
menu
3. Check buildings layer
4. Select that: (are within a distance of)
5. Select river_ polygon in dropdown menu of
feature in this layer
6. Enter 20 as a buffer distance and meter as unit
7. Click apply and click Ok
All buildings, which are at a distance of 20 m
from River Edge, are selected in map.
8. Clear your selection by clicking clear selection
icon .

Task 2: Select all buildings which are at a distance of 25 meter from centerline of Ringroad.
First, select Ringroad from Road_centreline
1. Go to selection menu and select by attribute
2. Double click RoadName from field, click '=' sign'
3. Click Get Unique Value
4. Double click Ringroad
5. Click Ok

To select the buildings which are at a distance of 25 meters from Ringroad,
1. Go to selection menu and choose select by location
2. Check Building layer as selectable layer.
3. Choose 'are within a distance of'
4. Select Road_centreline in dropdown menu of feature in this layer
5. Check Use selected features
6. Enter 50 as a buffer distance and meter as unit
7. Click apply and click Ok

All buildings which are within a distance of 25 meter from Centerline of Ringroad are selected in
map.

8. Clear selection.

Task 3: Select Commercial buildings which are completely within built-up area

1. Select Commercial buildings from Buildings layer using select by attribute


2. Select land cover class built-up from Land_cover layer using select by attribute
3. Go to selection menu and choose select by location
4. Select from the currently selected features in
5. Check buildings layer
6. Select Landuse in dropdown menu of source layer
7. Select 'have their centroid in the source layer feature' as selection condition
8. Check use selected feature

All commercial buildings that are completely within built-up area selected in map

Task 5: Select all buildings of KMC ward 35 which are less than 1 km away from Health Services.
1. Select buildings related to health services from Buildings layer by using attribute condition
2. Go to selection menu and choose select by location
3. Selection method: select feature from
4. Check Buildings layers
5. Source layer: Buildings
6. Spatial selection method: are within a distance of the source layer feature
7. Set buffer distance 500m and meter as unit
All the buildings which are within a distance of 500m from health services are selected including
the health services buildings.
