Single Layer Operations :

- They deal with only single data layer and processes onlyalter data horizontally on a layer.

- These operations provide the most fundamental tools of data preparation for spatial analysis.

- Single layer operations :

1. Feature manipulation.

2. Feature Selection.

3. Feature classifaction.

1. Feature Manipulation:

1.1 Boundary operations.

1.2 Proximity operations.

- Boundary Operations Tools:

- Clip :
It creates a cover which it consist of a portionof the original map.

- Erase:
It removes the portion specified by an inter mediate coverage and retains the remainingfeatures of original map.

- Dissolve:
It typically used to eliminate unwanted boundariesbetween map features.

1.1 Boundary operations.

1.2 Proximity operations.

- Proximity Operations Tools:

( Based on the distance derived from certain selected features ).

- Buffer :
It could be Points, Lines or Polygon.

- Thiessin:
It is only Points.
It generated polygon from a set of points.

2. Feature Selection:

It can be performed in GIS in several ways:

1. Directly from the map.

2. Using area shapes such as boxes or circles.
3. Using existing geographical regions ( Attribute or Location ).

3. Feature Classifaction.

Exploring GIS 5
00. Exploring GIS

First launch Arcmap then Add data you want to use.

Exploring GIS 6
01. Feature Manipulation
Proximity - Buffer tool

Now to use Buffer feature go to Geoprocessing then select Buffer.

01. Feature Manipulation
Proximity - Buffer tool

Then it will show us a setup window.

Select the Input Layer, and insert the range with it is unit.

01. Feature Manipulation
Proximity - Buffer tool

Then this is what we will see, circles around the cities.

Exploring GIS 9
01. Feature Manipulation
Proximity - Thiessen tool

Now we gonna use Thiessen tool, through Arc Toolbox then Analysis tools, Proximity and Create Thiessen Polygons.
After that choose the Layer in Input field.

You can also present gradually it based on the value you want as shape length.

Exploring GIS 12
02. Feature Selection
Manually

You can select the items that you want by hold on Shift and Lift button.
After that you can export data to use it later indivisually.

Manually

This is the result after exporting data we selected.

Exploring GIS 14
02. Feature Selection
Attribute

To select items through Attribute tool, go to Selection tab then select by Attribute.

02. Feature Selection
Attribute

After that slsect the method you want and add it to the box.

02. Feature Selection
Attribute

Now the selected item will appear on main screen.

02. Feature Selection
Attribute

Also you can add more items to the previous items by select Add to current selection.

Exploring GIS 18
02. Feature Selection
Location

Now we are going to select items through Location tool, go to Selection tab then select by Location.

Exploring GIS 19
02. Feature Selection
Location

This is the results of using the Location selection tool.

02. Feature Selection
Location

Now export the data you selected.

Location

And this is the results after export the data.

03. Feature Classifaction

Through layer properties then symbology, select the value then click on classify.

03. Feature Classifaction

Choose the method you want to present.
