“Just because something is possible does not mean that it is very probable” - Patrick B. McGrath, Ph.

These two word is very confusing for the reason that if we look at it in simple way they are much the same. To further
understand I will give the meaning of each word from a dictionary.

PROBABILITY— the ratio of the chances in favor of a event to the total number. —Webster’s Universal Dictionary
- the chance that something will happen · something that has a chance of happening - Meriam Webster’s Dictionary

POSSIBILITY— the state of being possible; a possible occurrence , a contingency. - Webster’s Universal Dictionary
- a thing that may happen or be the case ; the state or fact of being likely or possible; likelihood.—Google

 Sports: Based on the performance of the player in previous match the person decides the probabil-
ity.
Example: A baseball player with 400 batting average has more likely to get a hit.
 Insurance: It determine which plans are best for the person. It also determine what deductable
amounts the person needs.
Example: A person uses probability to determine how likely it is that the person need a file to
claim for choosing an insurance.
 Weather: Meteorologist can’t predict exactly what the weather will be so they use tools and instru
ment to determined that it will rain. They calculate based on percentage.

Own Understanding
The two words can be used differently at the same time similarly depends on the situation. I
can say, it is possible that I can pass this subject Math 208 if I will study the lesson diligently but how
probable I will give time to study the subject. There is no doubt that I can pass, but there is the word :
-” IF” and this is the time probability will comes out or will involve.
I think possibility is involved when you are determined to do such things or you have a goal
because all us has the possibility to promote but the probability to that is very low.
Based on my opinion probability is involved when you have the chance to do so. The probabil-
ity that all us will pass this subject depends on the attitude we will show or give. There are so many
possibility in our life to happen but it depends on the probability on how we will handle and face it.
All the possibility that we dream can be achieve if the we have a very high and determined probability
on it.
