JUSTIFICATION OF PLAY

Play in children’s literature had provided opportunities for the young


learner to learn by doing. Learning English through play may stimulate learner’s
creativity in solving problem. Besides, when students are using the language
from the play independently, it will contribute in building up students’ self
confidence. Therefore, in realizing the goal, I had chosen the play “The Magic
Turquoise”. It is suitable to use as teaching materials because the play had met
the requirement of pedagogical principles.

According to the pedagogical principles of involvement, it had stated that it


is essential for all the students to involve in the teaching and learning process.
Therefore, in order to make all the students to participate in the learning process,
students should be involved in the role play. The play, The Magic Turquoise
basically does not have much character, therefore to make sure learners are all
involve in the learning process, group should be formed. According to this
principle, only through active involvement of the learners, then the chances of
learning will increase. When students involved in the play, students will be
experience and imagine the situation in play. Children will love to involve in the
play compare to only observing from the side. For example, the part where the
main character Meme exchange thing with other persons he met. Students will
learn that the barter system is taking place when exchanging things.

Besides, the moral value that content in the play is in line with the
pedagogical elements where a teaching material should have moral values. For
example, in the play, the main character is grateful and appreciates everything
that he experience. He was optimist that opportunities will become better every
time. This can be taught to the students so that they will be optimist and never
give hope even though they are in their hardest situation. Students will be
practice the values that they had learned in their life. From the play itself,
students learned that if they are willing to give, they will get bigger happiness and
satisfaction. Learning the values is fulfilling the requirement of the principles of
moral and ethical values.
Under the affective principle, it is stated that reduce the anxiety will make
them more interested in learning the language. Therefore, the play that I had
chosen will help the students to have low anxiety when role play or dramatization
is being done. For example, when the main character Meme is exchanging the
rooster with a singer’s lyrics and the melody, students can sing. The
dramatization of the play can be in musical, students will move, do action and
sing, and hence the learning will be fun. Also, when learners are doing the
dramatization, they were collaborating with each other indirectly; this had met the
requirement of the pedagogical principles, learning through collaboration. By
collaborate, students learn to interact and communicate with each other it is
important in socialization. Also, in the play The Magic Turquoise, each of the
character was answer and talk politely when they were meeting each other.
Therefore, manner and courtesy were also learned from the play.

In conclusion, the play The Magic Turquoise is very suitable as the


teaching materials in primary school. This is not only because of it educational
purpose of teach the students to speak in the target language, but it is also help
the students to have better social skills.
