EXIDE Industries Limited are a manufacturing organization whose work is based on manufacturing

batteries. They are INDIAN based multinational storage battery manufacturers. They are one of the
largest manufacturers of automotive and industrial lead-ion batteries in the world, ranking number 1
in India and fourth in the world. Exide headquarters is located in Kolkata, India. Total revenue of
9186 crore INR, NET INCOME 668 CRORE INR.

They have two major plants in INDIA & SRILANKA and 7 plants in India who perform different
batteries and processes. Has a dealership network of around 46 countries across 5 continents.

Seven factories in India:

1.West Bengal-2, ONE OF WHICH IN SHAMNAGAR IS THE CORE PLANT/FIRST FOUNDED.

2.Tamil Nadu-1(Hosur-visited).

3.Maharastra-2.

4.Uttarkhand-2.

Exide also have 4 recycling plants to recycle the lead batteries which contains lead-ion and sulfuric
acid, reports based on the recycling processes suggest that their company are able to process again
98.83 percentage of lead batteries.

The factory located in Hosur is one of the seven of Exide industry Ltd, their area comprises 74.5 acres
they have easier access to transportation facilities and they use Chennai harbor for shipment. They
receive lead(powdered) as a raw material from maloor factory. They have 2400+ employees and
produce industrial and automotive batteries for railways, hospitals, UPS, towers, four wheelers.

EXIDE were officially known as Associated Battery Makers in 1947, soon incorporated in January 31
as Chloride International Limited, set up its first factory in Shamnagar, WB. In 1972 name changed to
Chloride India Ltd, Hosur as fourth factory in 1997.

These are the various departments present in Hosur plant of EXIDE Industries and they work
together in an efficient manner to achieve their organizational goal.

Every day before work each department have a DAILY MEETING with their workers to know about
their work and plan for that particular day. There is also a MONTHLY MEETING REVIEW where there
is involvement of every department head with the CHIEF OPERATION MANAGER(COM) of the factory
with their presentations which states the work they have for the past month and further discuss
about their plans for the next month.

Each department has different software where they store information and maintain
documentations. HR maintains the human resource and they control policies of the employees
working in the organization.IT department stores maintains records and documentations of the
company. PRODUCTION department deals with activities regarding processing, assembling and other
various production activities of the batteries. EHS deals with the safety of the employees and the
factory. STORES department deals with storage of raw materials and end products of the battery.
FINANCE deals with maintaining accounts of the assets, liabilities and equity of the company.
MARKETING is the department which uses different strategies to market the products and take it to
the customers.
The main important thing to start with the functions of department is to buy the raw material from
the vendors who are available near by the factory(within 50-60KM) to make sure of proper in stock
storage in the stores or else inventory cost may become a factor of concern. They agree terms and
concerns with the vendors and place the order. Done by financial department, they ask the
production department about the requirements of battery production which has to be done.

The production department receive order from the headquarters and south zonal officer COM about
the orders which they make. Once raw materials are received the stores department has them in
storage and quality checks them before moving them to production department after clearing the
accounts with financial department.

All these human activities are managed by SAP system and helped on by IT & HR departments. Once
final product is assembled it is sent to the dispatching unit to send them to their consumers (OEM)
like Toyoto, Hyundai, Ashok Leyland and also to railways, hospitals and other industrial areas (UPS).

The role of maintenance department to check and repair machinery and other in plant accessories,
EHS departments maintains high level safety and welfare of the employees working there and
maintain a healthier and safer environment of the factory.

KEY LEARNING AREAS:

 The IT system used here to maintain documentation i.e. record maintenance,


performance analyzation, integrating with the vendors, distributors, suppliers is SAP.
 SAP system is the basic software used in the EXIDE Industries, it connects each and
every computers present in the plant to main server computer and stores details of the
daily happenings of the company.
 System followed in purchasing is based on the order given by the required companies
and inventory stock is always kept in check
 Their market shares in Replacement battery segment is 65%, Industrial battery segment
the remaining 35%, majority of the revenue system (63%) is based on automotive
battery while the rest in industrial batteries. This gives the view of the requirement of
an automotive battery in our daily basis more than industrial one, explains the market
capitalization of EXIDE.
 Market share of EXIDE battery in general is 46% which is 26% more than any other
battery, shows they are in quite a better position and are placed well ahead of their
competitors in terms of market share.
 Users provide valid critical points about buying EXIDE over others, these includes
pricing, warranty, service, maintenance and durability.
 Compared to last year their net worth has increased by 9.49%.
 Some of the drawbacks are supressed margins, high cost of raw materials, EBDITA
DOWN BY 1%, low battery back up.

LEARNINGS:

 The organizational structure of a firm is explained and further proceeded with the
various functional departments of the organization and their involvement and
contribution to the company.
 The organization’s vision and mission was observed and were able to figure out the goal
of them.
 Learned what is meant by product portfolio and known the various kinds of product
which EXIDE manufacture, also the major product of the company.
 Policies and procedures followed inside the organization by all of the employees and
how important they are in development of an organization.
 Known about the vital role played by marketing department in order to promote a
product and the policies followed by doing them.
 Learned about how information technology plays a vital role in an organization, for
example known about the system which they followed in the organization.
 The difference between contracted and permanent labor , promotion policy for it and
training methods which they use to teach the freshers.
 Safety was a major factor concerned in battery industries and they followed their very
own safety measurements and it was unique involving a separate safety department.
 Terms like EBDITA, CUSTOMER VALUATION, INVENTORY COST, DEMAND AND SUPPLY,
ERP, OEM, BOM, .
 Planning of work, how they manage their manpower for an efficient working and profits.
 How they were going to make them sustainable in the upcoming years and dynamic
market.
 Analysis all of these , it was pretty much clear to know about their STRENGTHS,
WEAKNESSES, OPPURTUNITIES, THREATS.
